I haven't heard him all day today. I sent him some messages but they don't arrive. I called him and answered the answering machine telling me that "the phone of the person called may be turned off or not reachable". I'm worried.
I call him back. The answering machine answers again.
I decide to leave a message, «Hero... Are you okay? I just wanted to know why you don't answer... I mean, you are not reachable, why? Where are you? Please call me back, I'm worried."
Christ, who knows where he is... I don't want to know anymore. No, yes instead.
In general, I too have been busy today. My family and I went Christmas shopping at the mall, we bought gifts for everyone — except the one for Hero, which I had already bought for some time. We bought red and golden plates to set the table for tomorrow and the day after. It will be just the four of us — me, my sister, my mother and my father — and an aunt, who I haven't yet figured out who this person is and how long she has existed.
I'm getting bored on my bed, as usual, and I decide to text Anna.
Hello Anna. How are you doing?

She responds shortly with a photo:

All right, we made cupcakes, like the ones Hero made last time!

Awww, you are adorable!!!

How are you doing at home?

Well, I wouldn't go back to live here now and never.
All right, I'm a bit bored, but I'm fine, I have fun with my sister and some friends.

I'm happy. We miss you, see you on New Year's Eve?

Oh no, I'm staying here until January 4th.

Ah, got it. We'll get in touch.♥

Honestly, I miss Anna and little Ash so much too, he's like a nephew to me now, I got him something for Christmas too.

"Jo!" my mother calls me from downstairs. "Come down please, dinner is ready!"
I hurry to get off, because I'm starving.
"Here I am." I sit at the table, we eat lamb tonight. I taste a bite. "It's really good."
My sister nods in agreement with me.
At one point my father stops chewing and says, "Listen, but... couldn't you make a video call to this boy? So we meet him, right?"
In Kathrine the water goes almost askew, "Well done, dad!" Then she bursts out laughing with him.
Mom tries to be serious, but she tries to hide a smile to no avail.
"Mom," I turn to look into her eyes, "what's going on?"
"I don't know, honey. I have no idea," she laughs softly.
These three are making fun of me.
Oh my God... didn't they hear something the other night? Or worse, if they saw me, somehow?
"Yes, I mean..." my dad continues seriously "just a chat."
I shrug. "I can call him if you want."
"That's fine!"
I get up to pick up my phone and call him on FaceTime. It rings... but he doesn't answer.
"Um..." I start, embarrassed, "he didn't answer, he's probably busy."
My father is a bit disappointed, but he recovers immediately. "Oh, don't worry, there will be another time," he smiles at me and we go back to eating.
"Excuse me," Kath begins, "I still haven't figured out who this aunt is."
"Me neither," I say.
Mom sighs. "She is my aunt. You don't remember her because you were too young when she came to visit us the last time. This year she is here and we invited her for Christmas, end of the story," she explains.
Nothing has changed with this explanation, but I don't care much. I just want to know why Hero is not responding.
And suddenly my cell phone rings — normal call.
"Hey, I've been looking for you all day!" I exclaim, happy to hear him again.
My father looks at me with a smile that makes me want to slap him.
"Yes, baby, I've seen. Sorry if I didn't answer, my phone died."
Yeah... nice excuse. "Don't worry," I say anyway. "It was just that my—"
"Shh!" my dad does. "I was joking, forget it!" he whispers.
Hero chuckles, for sure he heard him. "Do you want us to talk later or...?" he tells me.
I take a look at my father. "Yes, better if we talk later, okay?"
"Mhm mhm, later, bye."
I put the phone down and my dad bursts out laughing.
"Dad!" I reproach him.
"I'm sorry! But it was fun!" he is doubled over with laughter.
My sister tries to restrain herself but then she breaks out too.
Oh, fuck it.
"You've got me fed up," I burst out. I take a last sip of water and go up to my room.
I'm not really mad, but I want to relax and take a hot shower.
My parents can sometimes be... a little annoying, but deep down they are fun.
I throw myself on the bed and close my eyes, I'm tired of today's shopping, but I swear I'm going to take a shower now.
