Ruins of Ephesus, Turkey - 8th June 2018

THE ANCIENT CITY of Ephesus is appealing to most of the cruise well educated passengers. They are walking around recording, discussing their wisdom of Greek and Roman history and how this archaeological site should be on everyone's bucket list when planning a Turkey expedition. One of the most important aspects is that the temple of Artemis had once been considered as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Pregnant, worn out sandals, blazing sun rays gliding into her hat which is resulting in a sweaty forehead and a weighing backpack consisting of snacks and three bottles of water turned off the charm of the ruins for Malika Syed Rizvi Khan.

She is bored and wants to return to the ship.

While her husband and in laws are more interested to visit another set of marble pillars and ornate carvings on walls, Malika announced she is heading to the enormous theatre.

"We are going there next," Zaeem reminded her.

"I'm too exhausted to wander around. I need to relax."

"Okay, should I drop you there?"

"Of course not, it's right by this lane. I'll follow the other tourists and find a place to sit. You won't have a problem finding me. If I'm not mistaken, I'm the only one who has worn a flowy white dress."

"Catch you later then, relax well," he muttered, pressing his lips on her forehead.

Malika stretched her arms high above her head when she sat on the marble stone seat which has clearly seen better days. She removed her sandals, shrugged off her bag and discarded the hat as the sun hid behind a cluster of white clouds.

"The theatre was built at the end of the Hellenistic period and enlarged by the Romans-" A tour guide in his mid-thirties explained aloud to the group of young Asian tourists and moved around the stage.

Opening her bag, she pulled out a clean handkerchief to wipe her face and a bottle of water. Grabbing a snack as well, she set all her possessions on her right side and listened to the tour guide.

"The structure for seating the audience reached up to thirty meters and can accommodate up to twenty five thousand spectators."

Malika glanced around, lips turning up in a soft smile at the idea of sitting in open air and under the stars, enjoying a stage play until the tour guide revealed.

"- aside from being the venue for political, religious discussions, play and concerts, gladiator and animal fights were also famed."

For some reason twenty five thousand people sitting and cheering as two gladiators fight each other or a wild animal to death for the sake of entertainment raised goosebumps across her arms. She is grateful that she can't create a vivid picture in her mind.
