Truth Within

I no longer see the good in people, I see the truth
It's a hard pill to swallow, but it's the truth
The world is an unforgiving and unkind place
And the people in it have only added to the disgrace

I thought once that people were inherently good
That there was a light shining bright, just like it should
But as I've grown older and seen the darkness consume
I've realized the truth, and it's been hard to assume

Every day I see people lying to their friends
I've witnessed relationships crumble and come to an end
People will cheat and steal without a single thought
The greed inside them has left them overrun and caught

It's not just strangers I see, it's also those that I know
Their true colors have shone through, and the light's been dimmed low
Friends have stabbed each other in the back, ruthlessly
Loved ones have betrayed without any real guarantee

It's hard living in a world where people may deceive
Where lies and deceit are something people will weave
But even with all the lies and distrust that I've seen
I won't let it change my actions or my own inner scene

I will still be the one to show kindness and love
Even when the world below me seems to be coated in a glove
I'll stand for what's right and the truth that I know
And let the rest of the world find their own way to grow

The truth is not always pretty, and it's not always kind
But closing my eyes to it would be like leaving it all behind
So even though it hurts to see what I know
I'll use it to make a better path, not let it go

The truth of the world may be darker than we'd like to see
But it doesn't have to define who we'll grow to be
We can still choose kindness, compassion, and grace
Even when the world we're in seems like a dark and harrowing place

So though I no longer see the good in people, I'll still see the truth
And use it to build a better future, and a better youth
For in the darkness there's still light, if only we look hard enough
The truth may be hard to bear, but it will make us all more tough.
