Slow Goodbyes

I felt you leaving even before you did,
As if the air grew colder with every passing day.
Our love had run its course, like a candle's wick,
Flickering in the darkness before fading away.

I saw the signs in the way you held me tight,
The way your kisses lacked their usual passion.
There was a distance in your eyes and in your might,
A subtle shift in our familiar love's fashion.

I wondered what had changed, what had gone wrong,
What had caused this shift from love to lust.
Was it something I had said or something I had done,
Or was it time that had betrayed our trust?

We talked it through, and though we tried to save
Our fragile bond, it seemed our love had died.
Our hearts were heavy, but we knew we had to be brave,
And let our love go, with tears we couldn't hide.

The days that followed were filled with aches and pains,
Our hearts too broken to be fixed in a day.
We walked on eggshells, avoiding each other's strains,
Pretending everything was fine in each other's way.

But as the weeks went by, the hurt slowly subsided,
And the memories of our love began to fade.
Our hearts slowly mended, the wounds no longer one-sided,
The pain slowly replaced by a new-found serenade.

And though we learned to live without each other's touch,
Our love had left its mark, a legacy on our souls.
We walked away with a newfound strength, without any crutch,
And though our love had died, we both had grown whole.

So now I look back on our love, with a sense of wistful grace,
And though it's gone, it will forever be engraved.
For in that love, we found ourselves, with each other's embrace,
And that slow goodbye, a gift that forever will be saved.
