The most painful goodbyes are those
Which were never said and never explained.
The words that could have soothed the blows
Are the ones that leave us feeling drained.
The void that's left within our hearts
Is the one that's hardest to bear.
For when we are torn apart
It becomes too much to bear.
The regrets of things we never did
The words that we never spoke
The feelings that we hid
Will forever be a heavy yoke.
The thoughts that keep us up at night
The ones that haunt us till daybreak
The things that never seemed quite right
Are the ones that make our hearts ache.
We replay events in our heads
Hoping for a different ending
But life's journey has many threads
And sometimes relationships need mending.
The love that we shared
Now feels like it's lost
But the memory will be spared
At least at some cost.
We try to move forward with grace
But the past is still weighing us down.
We feel like we're in a race
And we're always left out of town.
We wonder what could have been
If we'd just said goodbye
Would our hearts still be broken
Would we still wonder why?
We'll never know the answers
To the questions that linger on
But we'll try to take our chances
Hopeful for the chance to be strong.
When we learn to say goodbye
And explain it all too
We find the courage to fly
And start life anew.
We'll take the lessons we've learned
And apply them to life's new page.
Our hearts will no longer yearn
For the love that was once our cage.
Let us say goodbye
With all the grace we can muster
And hold our heads up high
As we journey on further.
The most painful goodbyes are those
That were never said and never explained.
But sometimes it's the only way to grow
And find that strength that remained.
