Had she once been here before?

It all felt so... familiar.

The idea of and state of such fragile mortality was something her foot had always been put through the ajar door. It always beckoned her through near-death experiences, stacking up like cubed toys of a child, each letter defining itself the more she grew, the more she felt, the more she experienced.

It was a wonder how she hadn't been ripped in by her ankles quite yet, having gotten so close before.

It would've been something like a step that lessened her burdens, a strained pressure of holding the door open for her to continue on causing her now torn legs to shake and bleed. To let go would've been like a deep breath after climbing a staircase that never seemed to end.

However, what she had not been prepared to see was that he met her on the other side.

It was not supposed to go this way.

The strings of Best Jeanist and Edgeshot were the only thing keeping him tethered to an endless void behind her that she could not see, but his peaceful, unscarred face in the white void behind the door was not enough for her to step through.

His lips moved, talking to someone she couldn't see, but it only fueled the human spirit's resilience to face adversity within her.

Yume's decision to spare her and suffer in return was no longer a curse, but a gift that had lasted long enough for her to see why... To be able to experience being on the brink of significant transition.

Whether that was life to death or one existence to another, she wasn't sure; but, being at the threshold and facing this was like a hand tugging on the clothes on her back–like his hand pulling her from the street before she could blindly take a step forward in a dream-like state.

This threshold of what had been accomplished from now until then, the moment when you could move on to what came next....

Perhaps the butterfly effect had found its way into the mix, trying them together with a single moment that would change the course of their lives.

That's what it meant to love.

That's what it meant to live.

That's what it meant to be a hero.

That's what it meant to be saved.

Seeing this was an overwhelming rush that her heart ached for once in her damn life for a desire that wasn't to be off to the sidelines, less than who she was, or someone to be locked away in the shadows so they wouldn't feed off any of her pain.

No, her heart desired to settle unfinished business before she'd ever take a full step through. No matter the solace of their circumstances in a setting of such imminent danger or the fact their lifelines entwined with one another past death's door like two butterflies dancing with strings so carelessly.
