Call the Midwife ~Chen

“Can you please help me?” You looked up at the tall man in front of you. He was slightly out of breath, his dark hair dishevelled, his mouth cutely turned up at the corners and his eyes wide; he looked panicked and lost and very handsome.

“Of course; do you need a doctor?” you asked him calmly, trying to calm him down a bit. You were at a work placement in a hospital for your university course to be a midwife.

“Yes—well not me, my—“, he couldn’t finish the sentence because a pretty— and very pregnant girl stumbled into him and clung to his arm.

“Chen—“, she groaned. You could see that she was going into labour, so you quickly ran and rang the bell for the doctor and the qualified midwives to come. You helped to assist her into one of the labour rooms and when the midwife finally came to help, you had to step outside. You had nearly forgotten about the man who had come with the girl, but when you walked out of the room he stopped you.

“Hey; sorry. It’s me again. Do you know what they’ll do with her now? Because I have to tell—“

“They’ll help her deliver her baby.” You looked up at him; he really was handsome. Too bad his girlfriend was having a baby in there.

“So—is she your girlfriend?” You asked hesitantly. He startled and looked at you, his eyes wide. Then he started laughing.

“My girl—Nonono. She’s not my girlfriend. She’s my friend’s girlfriend. I was just there when her waters broke and brought her over. She is a good friend of mine though.” He stopped laughing and held out his hand. “I’m Chen.” He smiled and you felt your knees buckle a bit.

“Cathie.” You took his hand and he held on a bit longer than necessary. Then suddenly another man stopped next to you, gasping for air.

“Che-en. Where is—“, he started, still trying to catch his breath.

“She’s inside. We’ll just have to wait.” He steadied the man a bit and smiled at you. “This is Cathie, she—“, he looked at you questioningly.

“I’m here on a work placement for my university course.” You filled in the blank. The other man smiled.

“Hi.” He said. “I’m Suho; my girlfriend is the one in there, just giving birth to—my child. Oh god. I should be in there, I should’ve—“

“Suho hyung calm down. She’ll be fine.” Chen calmed him down. He guided him to the row of seats next to the door to the labour rooms. You smiled and started to walk away again, when someone grabbed your wrist and turned you around. When you looked up, you saw Chen in front of you.

“Don’t just walk away. I was wondering if maybe—you would like to—grab a coffee? With me?” He smiled and you couldn’t say anything except—

“Yes, of course.”
