Fresh from a divorce from Plastic Surgeon Mark Sloan, Sky Rivers finds a new start at Seattle Grace Memorial Hospital. But the past eventually catches up.

Stepping out of the elevator Sky sees a woman standing at the nurses desk and walks over to her
Sky: "Excuse me. Would you mind telling me where Dr. Richard Webber is?" she asks the woman standing at the desk Woman: "Oh um..." Richard: "There she is" he says coming over to the two making Sky smile as they hug "How was your flight?" Sky: "As good as can be expected." Richard: "Oh Dr. Miranda Bailey this is Dr..." Sky: "Sky Rivers" she says shaking Bailey's hand "And if you couldn't tell my mother's favorite color is blue." she says as they laugh a little Bailey: "Nice to meet you Dr. Riv...wait a minute. Sky Rivers? As in..." Richard: "One of the best trauma surgeons in the country. Also my top student." he says making Sky chuckle a little Sky: "I used to suck up to you to get some of the best surgeries and now you're sucking up to me." Bailey: "Well what brings you to Seattle Grace?" Richard: "She's going to be hanging around the hospital for a few days. Get a lay of the land." Sky: "Word got out that I was looking for a new work place and Richard here just had to be the first to try to impress." Richard: "And impress we will."
The interns are walking along the hallway towards Bailey when they see her and Richard talking to someone
Cristina: "Oh my god! Is that who I think it is?" she asks stopping them from walking making the others look at her confused Izzie: "Who?" Cristina: "That's Sky Rivers." Meredith: "No way. The Sky Rivers." George: "Who's Sky Rivers?" Alex: "She's hot." Cristina: "Shut it" she says snapping at Alex before looking at George "And she's possibly one of the best surgeons out there. She specialized in trauma. Did a fellowship on both cardio, neuro, and general." Izzie: "She works on some of the most radical surgical cases." Cristina: "She holds the record for doing the longest surgery on a guy who got a billboard stuck in him. And he lived." she says in awe Alex: "What you got a crush on her?" Cristina: "Whatever" she says rolling her eyes at him "I gotta get on a case with her" she says as they watch Richard and Sky start to walk over to them "Oh here she comes. Dr. Rivers my name is Cristina Yang. I'm an intern here and just know that if you need anything I'm available to do it." she says making Sky's eyes widen in shock and the others start talking over each other to get her attention Sky: "Wow. Got some eager ones on your hands." she says looking at Richard Richard: "Alright people listen. You'll all have plenty of time to work with Sky here but for the time being give her a little time to settle in." Sky: "Nice meeting all of you." she says as Richard guides her away to get her a pair of scrubs ➿ Bailey: "What do you see, George?" she asks as they look at a scan George: "Hyperinflated lungs, cloudy with bullae. Seriously diminished capacity. She must be having trouble breathing." Bailey: "Course of action?" George: "Bullectomy procedure. Remove the bullae. Reduce pressure." Richard: "lt says here we operated on her back in '99. So Mrs. Drake has been through this before, but talk her through it anyway." Sky: "You should probably resist the anti-smoking lectures. She probably feels bad enough already." she says looking through the chart before handing it back to Bailey Richard: "It's gonna be just like old times. You and me in the OR." Sky: "Yeah can't wait." Richard: "Oh Preston. This is Dr. Sky Rivers, Sky this is Dr. Burke." Sky: "Nice to meet you." she says as they shake hands Burke: "Nice to meet you too. Wow Richard. First Derek and now Sky." Sky: "You're vying for chief of surgery aren't you?" she asks as he doesn't know how to respond "You can relax Dr. Burke. You don't have to mark your territory. Ask Richard here. Being chief of anything isn't really my thing." she says as Burke nods and walks away Richard: "I have a few things to take care of but I'll see you in there." he says looking at Sky who nods her head as they part ways Sky: "Ok." ➿ Bailey: "We call this ''a spaghetti procedure.'' We cut and deflate the bullae to facilitate gentle manipulation of Mrs. Drake's lung." she says to George as they watch Richard and Sky use a scope Richard: "Dr. Bailey, do you see that?" Bailey: "Sir? Oh, my ever-lovin." Sky: "We need to open her up." she says when they see something black and squishy on the screen Richard: "l'm taking out the scope." Bailey: "You heard him, people. Let's move." Sky: "Lights. Let's get set up." Richard: "Ten blade." Nurse: "Here you go." Richard: "Retractors." Nurse: "Retractors." Richard: "Scalpel ready. Towel." Sky: "Rib spreader." Richard: "Suction." George: "ls that a towel?" Bailey: "Get a pan." George: "Where did that come from?" Sky: "Best guess, her surgery five years ago." Bailey: "Something careless this way comes." she says as they finish the surgery ➿ Cristina: "A towel?" Richard: "Not good." George: "She complained of pressure on her chest. Nobody took her seriously." Richard: "Not good for the patient, not good for the hospital. Not good. Please tell me you've seen something like this?" Sky: "Not unless she swallowed it herself. Which I doubt she had." she says as he sighs out and they go to tell the patient what happened when she wakes up ➿ Derek: "I heard you were here." he says coming over to where Sky is grabbing a cup of coffee Sky: "Oh. Hey." she says as they hug Derek: "How you been?" Sky: "I've been good." Derek: "You know you're the talk of the whole hospital. Everybody wants to get some time with you" he says making her scoff a little at him "Where's Richard at? Didn't think he'd let you out of his sight." Sky: "He had something to deal with. Something about an intern saying she popped a glove during a CABG this morning." Derek: "Really?" Sky: "Yeah." Derek: "Now tell me. How are you really doing?" Sky: "I've been fine. Really." Derek: "Sky. Come on. We're best friends. We used to share everything with each other." Sky: "Yeah so much so that our spouses shared each other." she says giving a dry laugh making him sigh out Derek: "Have you spoken to him?" Sky: "Not since that night. What about you?" Derek: "No" he says as they stand in a moment of silence "So looks like you might be working here. We'll get to work side by side again." Sky: "Uh yeah. Maybe. I haven't made my decision. Hey look I gotta go but we'll talk later. Ok." she says as he nods his head and she grabs his wrist in a goodbye gesture before walking away ➿ Derek:" That was one hard fall. What do you see?" he asks after a patient freaked out and hit his head Izzie: "Subdural bleed." Alex: "With midline shift." Derek: "We have to evacuate this now. Anywhere else you have to be, Dr. Stevens, or are you in?" Izzie: "Brain surgery?" Derek: "Mm-hmm." Izzie: "Are you kidding me?" Derek: "That's what l thought" he says when he sees Sky walking past the room "Hey Sky" he calls out making her stop in her tracks and turn back to the room "Subdural bleed. Wanna scrub in with me?" he asks as she comes into the room and looks at the scans Sky: "Yeah sure. When are you going in?" Derek: "Right now." Sky: "Let me get changed and I'll meet you up there." she says as he nods and she walks away ➿ Izzie: "Dr. Shepherd, Dr. Rivers if you don't mind me asking, but how do you two know each other?" she asks as they look up at each other making her think she said something wrong "Sorry. It's just that, it's been said that you two are very close." Sky: "It's ok. Derek and I have known each other since we were kids. Went to elementary, middle, high, and med school together. Our class even had a nickname for the two of us." she says smirking behind her mask at Derek Derek: "Don't you dare" he says as she raises her hands from her position a little and chuckles "See it?" he asks motioning to the bleed Sky: "lt's hard to miss." Derek: "More than he bargained for." Alex: "Maybe he's lucky. Maybe this is his way out of the hole." Derek: "The hole? Interesting expression." Alex: "My father was into smack pretty heavy. He was a musician. lt's tolerated in his line of work. Not good for the family at home." he says as the others give him a look before going back to work
Once they finish they all scrub out
Derek: "Can you guys see him through recovery?" Alex: "Yeah, l'll take it." Izzie: "No, l can do it." Alex: "That's ok, Stevens. He's my patient now too. No, l got it. See your hockey player. l'm serious." Izzie: "Yeah, ok. l guess. Thanks, Alex." Alex: "No problem." he says as they all walk out the room
On her way out of the hospital Sky runs into Richard who walks her over to the elevator
Richard: "I'm sorry today couldn't be more exciting." Sky: "There was a towel left in a body and a hole was poked into a heart. That's exciting in its own way." Richard: "Yeah well you'll get more exciting cases. Especially the longer you stay here." he says making her sigh out before turning to him Sky: "Richard...I'm not staying" she says making him give her a look "I only came here out of respect for you and all that you've done for me." Richard: "Can I ask why?" Sky: "You know what happened. And well being around anybody that was involved, even a little bit reminds me of it...Derek reminds me of it" she says as he sighs out and gives her a look of sympathy "I promised to be here for a few days and that's what I'll do. But anything other than that...I just can't." she says as the elevator dings and she gets inside while he watches her
Next Day
Derek is standing in a room looking at a few scans when Richard comes in closing the door alerting him of his presence
Richard: "I need you to talk to Sky." Derek: "What do you mean?" he asks turning back to look at the scans Richard: "She wants to turn down working here." Derek: "Why?" Richard: "Because of you" he says making Derek's eyes widen "Because of what happened in New York. Look there are only a few kinds of doctors like Sky, even fewer that I know. Having her here will help the hospital in many ways. She brings more to this hospital than just her name. So talk to her. Do whatever you have to do to convince her to join us." he says walking out the room as Derek watches him ➿ Derek: "Hey." he says when he sees Sky about to get on the elevator Sky: "Hey." Derek: "Take the job." he says as she gets inside the elevator and she sighs out Sky: "Derek." Derek: "No. I get it. Seeing me or being around me hurts you. When you look at me you see two people who we cared deeply about who hurt you" he says as the elevator goes to close but he stops it with his hand "There's not going to be a better place than here for you. We get all kinds of crazy surgeries. Surgeries you couldn't even think of. The other day I had a man come in with nails in his head that was able to fully talk. Name one other place you know where that happens" he says as the elevator goes to shut again but he stops it "Addison and Mark..." he says sighing out "They took something from you. A part of you. Don't let them take the part of you that loves your job. The part that thrives for this these types of surgeries. Take the job. You won't regret it." he says letting the elevator fully close as she thinks about what he said
