"Well, you sure got up on time." My Abuela muttered sarcastically taking off her reading glasses and putting her book down. She looked calm.

Oh shit, she was furious.

I looked at the wall clock and discovered it was way past noon. Oh no!... I had missed breakfast... I mean I had slept all through the morning.

I walked past her and into the kitchen to avoid eye contact with her and in the process grab an apple.

She stood up and walked to the kitchen to stand by the door cross-armed. "What time did you get home last night." She said calmly again.

"I don't know," I muttered refusing to answer and still not looking her in the face. I shoved past her to walk into the living room.

"Hell, you don't..." She suddenly snapped walking up to the counter and putting a dollar into a glass jar on the island in the kitchen. I could tell her patience was wearing thin. "...you had me up all night worrying about you... you will not give me that attitude." She said now standing at the entrance of the living room not too close to the staircase.

"Whatever," I said throwing the cord of the apple into the bin it was best I avoided her and gave her simple answers she would tire soon.

I made an attempt to shove past her again to go to my room but I guess she'd had enough of my irritable behavior as she pulled me back by my elbow so our faces were only inches apart.

"Drop the sass right now or I'll ground you till you're married." She hissed. You see this was why I tried not to get on her bad side her anger was three times my own you thought I had a temper you hadn't met my Abuela that's why she was like three generations of me.

I blinked back in surprise and hissed back stubbornly. "You can't do that." The look in her eyes proved that she could and she would do that it had been long since I'd seen that look her dark brown eyes were completely dark and to be honest even though I would never admit it till I died she was the only person in my life that I feared.

"Try me."

We had a stare off for what seemed like an eternity her breathing was ragged like she'd been fighting and for a second her eyes flashed pain before returning to anger it was like it was never even there she had eye bags which proved to me that she truly she didn't sleep and I started to understand where she was coming from I came to Canada to hide from some really bad people the thought that I wasn't back scared her that was the problem she thought she'd lost me. My Abuela was... she was scared. I finally heaved a defeated sigh.

"Fine..." I said tugging to free my hand from her iron-clad grip no such luck. I would just tell her the truth. "Look I'm sorry ok I didn't mean to be out that long it's just I went on a date and..."

I stopped when her eyes went wide in shock and her beam grew it was like she was never even angry it took a minute to process what was going on until I realized what I'd said I wasn't even thinking and the words had already left my mouth and there was no taking it back.

"Did you just say date?" She said suddenly letting go of my elbow causing me to rub the place she had a hold on.

"Yeah." I said carefully and absently wondering what she was going to say I didn't even realize I was digging myself deeper and deeper in my grave

Her beam just grew larger and larger it seemed like her face might tear if she went any further and then my slow brain finally clicked.

"Oh no." She was suddenly pulling me to the sofa in the living room that look never leaving her face.

"Tell me all about it." She said when we plunked onto the sofa. She looked so excited she might as well have squealed.

"There's nothing to tell Abuela," I said attempting to stand up only to have her pull me back down into the sofa.
