Life had its ups and downs. Its love and hate. Its light and dark. While most people sat in one or the other, that wasn't to say it was impossible to stay between both. That had almost always been the case for (Y/N).

"Dad, can we go home now?" (Y/N) sighed, walking through the sunny streets of California with his father. The two were out on an afternoon stroll that was recommended by the elder of the group.

"Kid, you barely get any sun on ya'. You need that vitamin D, y'know?" His dad glanced down at him, lightly patting his shoulder. No matter how many times he told his son that he was pale, (Y/N) was adamant that he preferred to stay indoors.

The only time he enjoyed going out was on a night. It was always much cooler when it was dark, and he could see stars if he was in the right place. What kind of moron would ever take the scorching day over the lax and cold night.

"If you wanted to bring me out of the house, why didn't you take me somewhere during the night?" (Y/N) questioned. He'd be lying if he said he enjoyed the time out with his dad. He just couldn't help but hate the attitude of him. The stupid little charade he put on as if (Y/N) always did something that had to be criticised.

His mother was no better, always complaining that he was too quiet and should be out talking to friends (which he didn't have for the record).

The icing on the cake was the constant arguments he had to listen to from the two parents. It wasn't just his 14 year old brain that was thinking the wrong way; he knew the two were already on the doorstep of a divorce.

"Because the whole point is for you to get some sunlight." His dad rolled his eyes, looking at the passing cars. The two arrived at a nearby cafe just as a woman walked out the glass doors. Her hair was H/C, matching (Y/N)'s. She noticed the two boys and they noticed her.

"Well, here's your mother." Muttered his father as the woman walked over to the two.

"I was wondering where you two were." His mother said, her heels clicking as she came to a stop in front of them. (Y/N) assessed his mother for a second. She wore a blue coat with a black shirt. Her jeans were black and her heels were the same. Her wedding ring was missing from her finger, but the onyx pendant around her neck was still in place.

If he was honest, the only thing he even liked about the appearance was the pendant itself. Something about the black hexagonal gem gave him a feeling of comfort. Though his parents frustrated him, it didn't mean he didn't love them, and his mother's necklace was something that reminded him of her love for him.

"We got caught up for time." His father said, an odd tone in his voice. The two parents locked eyes for a moment, as if they wanted to say something but not in front of their son.

"Well, it doesn't matter. Let's go down to the mall, see how long we can be out in the sun before the vampire starts to burn." She joked, making (Y/N) scowl. And back he was to his upset attitude.
