Though they had 3 areas to train in, the majority of sections 8, 9 and 10 was open space aside from the very center of section 9. In the middle there was a large partially demolished factory building surrounded by several large fallen trees. The felled trees were so immense they would have easily shaded half the grounds if they were still standing. This layout left very few places for the greenette to try and ambush his partner from. So maybe it was not entirely about Midoriya's lack of full control. Only All Might knowns.
After a bit of looking around Izuku decided that concealing himself in the down trees would not be a wise choice. Not when his opponent's quirk was literally explosive. After all, wood and fire aren't friends. That left only the dilapidated building.
Once he entered the crumbing edifice he managed to find a hole in the ground floor of the forsaken factory that led even further down. Looking closer, it seemed to be the entrance to a sub-basement. With limited options for ideal ambush locations he began to make his descent before his time was up and his partner could spot him.
Moments later he was successfully hidden away. As Deku waited to hear approaching footsteps, he crouched behind a detached chunk of concrete wall. He was well concealed. Far enough out of sight to be hard to locate but not so far in as to inhibit his ability to enact his attack when the time came. He had to admit, It was pretty perfect.
It was no surprise when it took less than ten minutes to hear movement above him. He knew how skilled his classmate and future partner was. But much to his satisfaction it took longer before he knew his fiery target had located the hidden level he was occupying. If you think about it, this isn't the most realistic of situations. I know we will have to patrol in sketchy places when we're pros but today we KNOW a 'Villain' will strike so it won't exactly be unexpected. Though we don't know from where or exactly when so maybe that-
The sudden sound of rubble breaking under heavy boots brought the most promising student UA has seen in years to refocus on surprising his opponent. A crackling sound somewhere very nearby was the only warning he needed to avoid a small but powerful explosion to his right. With a little help from his quirk to enhance his speed, Izuku managed to dodge just in time. He successfully avoided any real injury beyond a few scrapes as he rolled to his feet and found himself eye to eye with his rival.
"That shitty muttering of yours gives you away Dipshit. How am I supposed to rely on you as a partner if you give our positions away with your damn habit useless Deku!? HAAH?!" The pair spent enough time fighting one another to know they could afford to sacrifice a few minutes of their assigned training to work out their ongoing issue. Well, Izuku's ongoing issue anyway.
"Sorry Kacchan. Do you want to switch and YOU be the Villain? We have plenty of time left." Midoryia smiled at his scowling friend and rubbed the back of his head nervously. Another, albeit less annoying, habitual behavior for the jade-eyed youth.
"What I want is for you to quit your fucking mumbling and no, I've got a better idea. We know how to fend off a surprise attack in most circumstances. We fucking better with all the experience we've had recently. We won't be able to surprise each other either since we've worked together so damn much after everything with All Might." A look of frustration and hurt flashed over Katsuki's tense features at that through. "So let's spar full out. We haven't been able to really let loose since... then. You're supposed to be getting stronger to take over for him but I'm going to prove that I am still the strongest even after this last month of you working your ass off." Wiping away the pain that had momentarily clouded his good looks and crossing his arms in his usual fashion, the ruby-eyed boy smiled at his long time on-off-on again friend. That is, if you could call the ferocious almost predatory turning up of his lips a smile.
"But, we're not supposed to do that. Not after last time. Principle Nezu said we're supposed to be limited to what the school decides we need for now. That's why I can only try to go above 15% when All Might is training us."
"Nobody is watching us now, so who would know? What's wrong Nerd, scared I'll kick your ass? I'll show you AND All Might how strong I am!" The subject of Bakugo's kidnapping and the once top hero's forced retirement was an ongoing sore subject for the temperamental blonde. It had only been about a month since then and the spiky haired teen was still very much convinced it was all on him. Not so deep down he was sure Japan would not have lost its Symbol of Peace if only he had just been able to escape Hand Job's group of overrated cronies before they pulled him into that shitty portal. No amount of reasonable argument from anyone could convince him otherwise. Not even the man himself.
The freckled boy facing him knew this all too well. He was in no way surprised at the slightly sad tone in the others' voice as he spoke earlier. What he WAS surprised by now was the statement about not being supervised. All training was closely monitored either in person or by surveillance. Oftentimes both. When the students were scattered around like this some areas used drones while others used fixed observation equipment depending on location.
Students were never not supervised. Partly for evaluation purposes but also as a measure of safety. These are students after all. Still learning about their own limits and abilities meant accidents happened. There was a reason Recovery Girl never needed to worry about job security. So why would his deceptively intelligent friend suddenly claim that wasn't the case? Did Kacchan hit his head coming down here? But no, that doesn't make sense. He's been injured way worse than a little bump to the head before and there were no cognitive issues then. So why would -
A small but powerful shove to the shoulder brought the greenette out of his musings enough to refocus his attention on the actual person in front of him rather than his own rambling thoughts.
"I'm fucking fine Idiot." Rolling his red eyes in frustration, Katsuki gestured to the space the two were in. "Look around Dumbass. Do you see any surveillance down here? I bet the damn teachers don't even know this area exists." A quick look around confirmed a noticeable lack of the usual observation devices.
"Y-you're right Kacchan. We should make sure we tell All Might after class. I don't mind sparing, I miss being able to really try out my skills but we should still be careful. We don't want to collapse the rest of the building on top of us."
"Like the damn pillar?"
"I said sorry! Anyway, maybe we should move some of the rubble to reinforce the floor above first?"
"Of-fucking-course I'm right. We can do that but it will also be a good incentive to control your power when you have full cowling going." A soft 'tsk' was heard as the taller youth turned away from his future partner. "Guess I could work on my short targeted bursts too. A little." Making as if he were inspecting the crumbling concrete around them and NOT still thinking about his favorite Hero's reason for retirement, the taller youth continued to speak without facing his partner. "Let's get going. We only have an hour left to train till we have to go back to Sleeping Beauty's class."
It didn't take long to stack some of the larger pieces of debris. The change effectively added support structures to the ground floor above the pair's head while also clearing a somewhat open space. It wasn't long before they became engaged in a (deathmatch) rigorous focused sparring.
When it was time to return to the locker rooms, the pair talked about different aspects of their (deathmatch) meticulous training. The next evening they would have their mandatory private fight tutoring so they focused on specific aspects they wanted to go through with their mutual favorite hero and trainer.
All the students in class 1A had similar extra sessions this term with the different members of staff on different days. The goal of the sessions was to help all the students maximize their best traits and build up their weak points in more of a one on one or two on one setting. Seeing how popular the group had inadvertently become with the growing threat that is the LOV, the school was eager to give the aspiring future Pro's all the extra help it possibly could.
