Modern Peter Oneshot: College Dropout

2nd Person POV

Y/N was conflicted.

She was a college student. Most young adults her age were taking a gap year, a break from the stress of school. Y/N was what some might call determined, while others foolish. She had gone straight into college after finishing high school, and it had been the worst decision of her life thus far.

Y/N was smart, extremely smart. She could tell you the capital of any country and translate anything into French. She could do a calculus problem in her head and knew every element and their respective abbreviations. Y/N was smart, extremely smart. Book smart. She often made the wrong choices by overestimating herself, working to the point of exhaustion. When she decided to go straight into university, she was head driven and didn't think about the repercussions.

Peter knew of Y/N's recurring habit. He knew she often overworked herself and made every effort he could to take the weight off of her. Making sure she took time to rest, forcing her to get a decent amount of sleep. As her boyfriend, he knew that when she wasn't under so much pressure, she was an all around happier person.

Though Peter had already been thinking it, Y/N came to him about the idea first. It had taken her a long time to even fathom it, but eventually she decided it was the best thing for her at the present time.

Y/N was going to drop out of college.

Peter completely supported her in this. He knew she would be happier once that great burden had been lifted, and that was all that mattered to him. While he was worried about how Y/N was going to tell her parents, he knew that in the end it would be for the better.

Everything was done. All of the papers and forms had been signed. Y/N was no longer a college student. All that was left was to announce the news to her parents.

Y/N knew that they wouldn't be happy with her decision. They had been the ones to urge her to go to college early, and education was everything to them. While their support meant a great deal to Y/N, she was sure that it would all be okay in the end.

Y/N went alone to tell her parents. She knew that if they were mad with her and Peter was in the same room, things would become even worse. That was the last thing she wanted to happen.

When Peter opened the door to the apartment he shared with Y/N, he knew that her parents hadn't taken the news well. He had tried to phone her, but she hadn't picked up. He had waited until she arrived home, and was meant with a crying, cold Y/N.

Peter didn't asked any questions. He didn't need to. He simply brought Y/N inside and hugged her. He kissed her hair, telling her over and over again how much he loved her, and that he would always be there for her.

"What happened?" Peter asked her, much later. They had migrated to the couch, where Y/N was crying less.

"I don't want to talk about it." The girl already looked small in Peter's arms, but her fragile voice made her seem as fine as glass.

Peter kissed her cheek."I love you. You made the right decision. No matter what your parents do or say, I will always love you. You have accomplished so much in your life, and this is just a bump in the road. I love you."
