Here are the highlights from today's volunteering session at my local humane society!

A bird literally got out of its cage and flew under the fridge. It just hung out under there for about ten minutes before attempting escape. It failed.

Me: *opens a gosling cage*

Gosling: *stares at us from on top of its hideously deformed neck*

Volunteer and me: *jerks back*

Me: We broke the gosling by opening the cage!
*
Intern: *ranting about the new "Transformers" movie* Optimus Prime is BAD! If he's not good by the end of the movie, I'm going to LOSE MY SHIT.
*
Volunteer: Can I take a peek at the possums?

Intern: Sure! *pulls out box of baby possums*

Volunteer: That one doesn't look so good...

Intern, volunteer, and me: *stare at very obviously dead possum*

Intern: Well, that's not good...

Calling in is when someone brings in a wild animal. Often times, the animal could have been left in the wild and the people are terribly wrong about their situation.

Intern 1: Someone just called in a falcon!

Other interns: *cheer because they love falcons*

Intern 1: But it's them saying it's a falcon, so...

Intern 2: It's probably a robin.

Intern 3: [Another intern] thinks it's a pigeon.

Update: I have since watched a very harried-looking man with falcon hunting gloves hurry past several times with a caged animal. I have also heard him say something about not knowing what to do with a falcon to a coworker. So long story short, it's actually a falcon!
*
Visitor 1: *looking at picture display of the animals kept in the society* I don't wanna see none of these animals.

Visitor 2: I do! I wanna see - *points to each of the animals, finishing with a raccoon*

Visitor 1: I see enough raccoons outside.
