It was your birthday, but you wished it wasn't. Your boyfriend wasn't home and he was easily the most important person in your life, but unfortunately, he was away for yet another race. 

"Happy birthday me..." You congratulated yourself and then walked down the stairs to take the present Max had left before flying off from the dinner table. You had been anxious to open it the entire week, but finally, you got to open it. Firstly you read the little note he had put with it. 

Happy birthday to my biggest and only love! I'm so sorry I can't be home to celebrate with you, but I promise to make up for it. But before I will do that a little present for my princess. I love you.

You smiled. You knew Max would make it up to you. You opened the envelope and chuckled at the present inside. A day in the spa for two. You would have loved to go with Max, but of course, it was date-bound to your birthday. You took your phone and dialled your mother's number. 

"Hi mom, how do you feel about a day in the spa?"

"Happy birthday first of all darling. But yes, I would love to go with you."

"Thanks, mom. I'll be ready in an hour or so, shall I pick you up?"

"I'll pick you up and I'll be there in an hour then."

"Okay, I'll see you." You chuckled and hung up to get ready for a day in the spa. You cleaned the house a bit seeing it was a mess and decided to thank Max for the present. It wasn't his fault he couldn't be home for your birthday, so there was no reason for you to be cold towards him. 

You: Thank you for the gift. Mom and I are going to make good use out of it. Can't wait to see you again

"I feel so calm." You joked when our mother and you got out of the spa. "It was  a great idea from Max to gift me this."

"It was lovely today, I have to agree."

"Thanks for joining me by the way. It would have been awefully boring without you." You hugged your mother and you got into the car. "Do you want to stay for dinner? It is so quiet when Max isn't home." Your mother shook her head. 

"I think it is best if I just drop you off at home." You faked a smile. You would have loved it if your mother had stayed and you wouldn't have to be alone yet again. Your mom parked the car in front of the home you shared with Max and you got out. "I love you darling. I'll call you tomorrow."

"Okay, bye mom." She drove off and you opened the front door with your keys and you almost fell over a pair of unfamiliar shoes. 

"Hello?" You asked, your voice trembled and you were scared out of your mind. Who would be in your home? You got your phone and had the alarm number ready to call the police if there is some stranger in my house.

"Surprise!" Suddenly is being yelled all around you and you screamed. 

"Happy birthday schat." Max walked up to you and you started to smile like an idiot. 

"Max!" You threw your arms around his neck, but quickly let go when you heard sounds coming out of your phone. "Shit." You brought it to your ear. "Yeah hello, I am so sorry, I thought there was someone in my house but it turned out to be a surprise party." You sheepishly told the man on the other side of the line. "I am so sorry for all of it." The man laughs. 

"It's okay, better be safe than sorry. Have a nice party!"

"Thank you so much." You ended the call and people all around you started to laugh, making you blush. "Well, better safe than sorry." You used what the man just had said to you to excuse yourself.
