"The fuck you mean we have another dead end?" I yelled running my hands through my hair. I was so damn tired of hitting dead end after dead end. Like an endless loop of failure. Maybe we were going in the wrong way? No, Emily knew what would happen if she lied in any way shape or form. Maybe she was feeling risky? God, who knows what goes on in that small head of hers. "Colby i went through every crack and tumble, nothing leading to her i swear by it." Mike had just scanned through another small city just near Vegas. Nothing, again. I stand up, obviously grown frustrated with myself. "Well you'd think after five and a half months we would have some sort of lead by now." I opened my fridge, and hesitated to grab a claw, grabbing a water bottle instead. The last thing i would need is to be drunk right now. Sam walked up to me and pet my back trying to calm me down. "Look brother, we have the rest of California to go, she can't be far i know it. You know it. Don't give up just yet." I nodded at him, playing with her bracelet softly on my wrist. The beads twirled and danced along the stretchy string, it kept me steady. This gave me hope. I messed up, yes. But that was months ago, a drunken mistake. I was better now, in my own apartment. Yes it was right next to Sams but it's my own space. I needed to get my head in the game again, no more stopping. "I'll find you Jet, you'll turn up somewhere." I whispered to myself, yea i could do this, we could do this. I was so lucky to have friends to fall back on. "Cass, what's up next?" I snapped back into business, ready to tackle down any three cities next. We were all sitting in the couch area in my apartment, shocking that we weren't in Sams for once. But sometimes you gotta spice it up, somewhat. "I have three so far, under the population of 10k but also some over the population of 15k." Cassie said pulling up her presentation on my tv. Emily had convinced us that David would want to be unpredictable when doing something like this. Meaning he could be in the biggest cities or even the smallest of ones. So we were bouncing around from town from town, city from city, just for any sort of lead. But nothing had come up yet. We had barley started actually digging a month or two back. For obvious reasons like moving and work, it's just been a lot to tackle. And we all agreed no single head outs on the look, we would come together for check ins and updates. "Shoot away," i smiled as Cassie flipped through her images of maps. "First up, Mountain View Acres. With a whopping population of 4,260 it has small, but fairly well neighborhoods. Plus i heard their food is good there." She smiled and looked around us nodding in agreement. "So who's taking up this one?" Jake asked, i wouldn't say him and Reggie are on best of terms still, but they can tolerate each other for more than five hours. Which was good enough for me. "I say we go in groups, like the Krac house can go together and the girls can go together and the Traphouse?" I asked before anyone else could put their input. A month or two after the Traphouse split Reggie and Cassie decided to move into the now known Krac house. It was sudden, but it was better for them, a sketchy hotel wasn't the safest home plan for them. Mike moved in with some of his other friends we don't really know. All we know is that they're normal, so they don't really talk to us other than a passing by type of thing. Aaron moved in with his new girlfriend, kind of removing himself from the group. And the girls are the girls, they live everywhere all the time. One day their at each other's house the next they're huddled up in the Krac house. No one really knows why, but no one really asks either. Corey was living in an apartment not too far by also. And Jake was across the hall from us, we rented another apartment room, just next to Jakes. It was supposed to be Jordan's, but Emily happily took that place. We made her pay for her own shit though, i'm not going all nice on her just for helping. "Xepher and i can go together, it'll be easier taking them down and just catching up with you guys in a different place." Mike said, sipping his beer. Cassie nodded and typed away at her computer. "I'll have places for each of you guys by... tomorrow afternoon. So don't waste time when you get it" she smiled making us chuckle. Everyone could agree she enjoyed being up and running a lot. Most of the time at least, other times she would sleep for 12+ hours just because she could. We all went back on our phones, chatting here and there about youtube and such. "Someone's here," Aryia said loud enough for us to hear. "How far?" I asked turning down the music that was playing. "It's a girl, she just got on the elevator. She has something big on her mind. Her heart is pounding like a mother trucker. Assuming she's coming here." He said as he relaxed his body a little. It was probably Serena. We had grown to be really close friends. Jake never asked about what had happened that morning or the previous night and Kat just didn't care as much. She knew when it was time i would know what to do, and she said she respected my decision either way. But to be honest, i didn't have a clue what to do yet. Other than that Serena was just a friend that i made at the party, Kevin was skeptical at first, but i assured him about her sexuality and he let it go. The door burst open with the streaked haired girl, holding her phone out with wide eyes. "We've been expecting you," Aryia said in a sort of evil villain tone. We chuckled and she nodded. "I know i heard you talking shit," she smiled as everyone 'ooed' at them and Aryia just shook his head. "Anyway, have you guys heard about The Reaper?" She said as she sat down next to me, bouncing her leg with excitement. We all shook our heads and she stuck her phone out to the group. "Is that like a movie or something?" Tara asked, making Serena chuckle. "No, but apparently there's this killer going around and that's their name, and no one knows who it is. All they have is small clips of The Reaper killing left and right before the tape cuts." She said, there was a video of either a small man or a woman, i couldn't really make it out with the quality. The person was walking into random houses and just, killing people. "Anyone know why they're just killing people?" I asked looking away from the screen. Serena shook her head and shut her phone off. "Nope, in fact they weren't even planning on releasing this on the news so people wouldn't freak. I just hacked into the A.P.P.'s private messages to get it." She smiled. "Well that's not terrifying at all," Kevin laughed out along with Mike. "How many people have died so far?" I asked in full curiosity. "Only four, but they say they're not going to stop there.." she trailed off, leaving us concerned slightly until Sam groaned. "They want us to take up that case dont they." We all groaned after him, Corey even fake shed a tear. "Well i was ghosting the chat room, they said they were thinking about it. Just because you guys are the closest in the area and the highest group. The other groups are as far as Texas or Georgia." Serena smiled slightly and we nodded. It made sense, but i only had one thing on my mind right now. I don't want any distractions. "I'll talk to Brennen about it, whoever it is probably doesn't work alone," i said walking over to the kitchen. "Great, i'll let them know you're up to it," Serena wasn't one on one with the head of the a.p.p. mostly because of personal issues. No one loved them of course, but we do as told and drift by and get paid, just to live somewhat normal lives. So since Serena wasn't 'with' them, she was kinda like our messenger to them. She's like an innocent girl that no one would expect to hack into their system, but she did, a lot, and she didn't give two shits if they found out. "Do you think they call them The Reaper because it's like grim reaper?" Jake asked, you could tell with his tone he was genuinely asking. Tara slapped him in the arm as the rest of us looked at him blankly. "No, Jake the name is from a soda brand." Kat laughed out, Jake snickers and nods, "you have a point." Aryia turns his head to the window, i follow his gaze outside until he looks back. "Someone's rides here," Serena stands up, texting busily on her phone and grabbing her jacket. "I have ears wolf boy no need to remind me." Aryia fake gasped and held he hand over his heart. "Okay mermaid," he laughs. "Spelled differently wolverine, stick to comic books." She smiled and said goodbye before leaving, shutting the door behind her. "She knows how to argue," Kevin smiled. "What girl doesnt?" Reggie asked just before Cassie slapped him. "Nice one," Tara smiled. "I'm not wrong!" He yelled in defense. "First rule of arguing with a girl, don't do it." Kevin laughed out. The girls rolled their eyes, and we all turned back to our phones. Just as i go to turn the music back up, the tv turns on.
