Four months later, Jace came back after successfully finishing his internship and Emily greeted him with a smile.
"I missed you so much, Em" He brought her in for a passionate kiss. When she did not exactly kiss him back, he pulled away and looked at her concerned. "Something wrong, baby?"
She pried herself out of his grip and smiled half-heartedly. "Nothing Jacey, I'm having my period so I'm a bit tired that's all" she replied not meeting his eyes.
"Ohh okay, why don't you go take a nap and I'll make you some snacks" he caressed her cheek lovingly.
"Okay" she gave him a half-smile and went to her room.
One week later, Jace got a letter from the NASA stating that he had been selected for the job he applied for and there were no words to describe how happy he was at that moment.
He had finally done it! His life's dream!
He didn't waste any time as he grabbed his phone and called his mother to tell her, only to receive the devastating news that his father had met with an accident and was in a coma.
When his father died ten days later, he called Emily to inform her.
"I'm so sorry about your dad, Jacey," she said feeling bad for him.
"I just can't believe I won't be able to see him again. I miss him so much, Em" Jace sniffled.
"Don't worry Jacey, everything will be okay" she reassured him.
Jace wiped his tears and took in a shaky breath before speaking. "Hey, I was wondering if you could come to LA for the funeral. It would mean a lot to have you with me"
"Oh I'm sorry Jacey but I can't......I...I ahh.....kinda have this very important interview that I have to prepare for" she said.
"Ohh it's okay, Em. All the best for your interview. I'll call you tomorrow" he said and hung up.
A week later, when he went back to Boston, he saw Emily and his roommate/ best friend Logan waiting for him.
"Hey guys" Jace smiled weakly as he placed his bags on the floor beside the couch and went to kiss Emily.
She gently pushed him away, holding him at arm's length. "Jacey, we need to talk"
"What's wrong, Em? Something happened? Did I do something wrong?" He asked, worrying he had done something to upset her.
"No Jacey it's not like that, it's just......" She paused and looked at Logan, who gave her an encouraging nod.
"What's going on Em?" Jace inquired growing more concerned.
She took a deep breath and turned to Jace. "Jacey, I.....I....."
