October 10th - Prompt: Understand

------------

"Peter!!!!!!"

Peter dropped his pencil as he jumped, sighing when Lucy came running into the room.

He turned to her, prepared to tell her to just stop doing that, when his face dropped and his eyes went wide. "Lucy?!" He exclaimed.

Lucy stopped dead a few steps away from Peter, grinning from ear to ear.

"What is that?!"

"A kitten!" Lucy answered happily, holding the little cat close to her chest.

Peter stared for a while. "And why do you have it?" He asked slowly.

Lucy glanced down at the sleeping kitten. "I found it lost in the woods." She said somewhat sadly. "It was meowing and meowing for help, I couldn't just leave it there."

Peter hesitated. "So, its not a talking animal?" He murmured.

Lucy shook her head. "No," She told him. "It's like a kitten you'd find in England."

Peter sighed a little... he could see where this was going already.

"Can we keep it?" Lucy asked.

Peter took a deep breath, turning a little more to face his sister. "Lu, I dunno..." He breathed.

"Come on Peter, please?!" Lucy begged. "I promise I'll look after it, I'll feed it, I'll love it, I promise!"

Peter ran a hand through his hair. "You don't even know whether it's a she or a he." He pointed out.

Lucy frowned a little, glancing down at the still sleeping animal. "I think it's a he." She said thoughtfully. "It's look like he is anyway."

Peter sighed.

"Please Peter." Lucy tried again. "I can look after it, I really can."

Peter was quiet for a very long time. "I'll talk to Susan and Edmund." He said.

Lucy beamed.

"I haven't said yes." Peter said quickly before she could say anything. "Not yet."

Lucy closed her mouth and nodded a little. "I know." She said.

"Why don't you go and find him some milk, and I'll go talk to them now?" Peter suggested.

"Thank you!" Lucy said excitedly, before running from the room.

Peter shook his head slowly, his eyes slightly wider. "What in all the world's just happened?" He muttered to himself.

Today had been going totally normal, and then Lucy comes running in wanting to adopt a kitten, and Peter had no idea what to think of it.

☆☆☆

"So?" Lucy said, all but leaning towards Peter in her excitement.

Peter glanced at the kitten, who was fast asleep on Lucy's bed, before turning back to his sister. "You can keep him." He said softly.

Lucy had never looked so excited in her life, and immediately wrapped her arms around Peter's waist, hugging him tightly. "Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!" She exclaimed.

Peter couldn't help but smile a little, and obviously he hugged her back. "But you have to understand that he's your responsibility okay?" He said. "Teach me that you're able to take care of him."

"I will." Lucy said quickly. "I promise."

Peter nodded slowly, eventually pulling away. "You'll have to think of a name too." He told her.

Lucy gasped. "Oh yeah." She said. "I'll find the perfect name."

Peter chuckled weakly, and even though he was still hesitant about this whole thing, he bent down a placed a gentle kiss to the top of his ten year old sisters head. "Don't be late for tea." He told her, before smiling and leaving the room.

Lucy bit her lip as she smiled, turning to the kitten, before jumping up and down a few times and clapping her hands, quickly apologising when the kitten woke and looked up at her.

☆☆☆

Two weeks later, Lucy was wondering down the corridors, calling for her kitten, seeming frustrated.

"Oh where are you." She muttered to herself. "Peter's gonna kill me if I've lost you."

She carried on wondering down the corridors, calling her kitten, before she stopped dead outside Peter's room.

She couldn't help but smile at what she saw, and chuckled quietly.

Peter was fast asleep in his bed, and the kitten was curled up around his neck, his little chin resting on Peter's shoulder, also sleeping.

"And that's the person who was hesitant about a kitten." Lucy muttered to herself, smiling.

After a moment, she shook her head in amusement, and reached out the close the door, making sure she did it quietly so as not to disturb either of them.

"Told you he'd warm up to him."

Lucy turned when she heard Edmund's voice, chuckling. "You did indeed." She breathed.

"Come on." Edmund breathed. "Susan made cake, let Peter sleep for a while."

Lucy nodded. "I was going to."
