Dissatisfied I felt the other side of the bed while grumbling in a half-asleep state but only found emptiness which is why I opened my eyes in confusion. And indeed, I was alone in my hospital bed.

Where did he go?

After my father stormed into my room in the night, doctor Taylor explained that I needed to stay for a few more days to see if the wolfsbane left any damage they couldn't see before. Dad drove home in relief after making sure I seriously was awake and fine.

And Cassian and I cuddled up tightly in my bed and actually, I had hoped to wake up in his arms. Sadly, I got disappointed.

Grunting I sat up and ran my fingers through my greasy hair. I really needed to take a shower. This was disgusting, no wonder he left. I probably smelled like hell.

Right at that moment the door opened and a nurse, I knew from back then, came in.

»There he is again. My favorite patient,« Rose giggled and noted the few measurements that the machine showed.

»And there she is again. My favorite nurse,« I answered with a laugh and made her grin broadly.

Rose was a always happy looking woman at the end of her thirties. She had dark-brown hair that sometimes shimmered dark-red if the sun shone on her head. The green of her friendly eyes was quite nice to look at but nothing in comparison to Cassian's.

Rose was no wolf but she was part of a family of our pack. Her mother was a human and Rose got the gene from her, even though our wolf gene normally was more dominant and the possibility of getting a child with the wolf gene was much higher than getting a human child.

Well in her case, she didn't get the gene. But she still had supernatural abilities – like a fast self-healing and better senses, only the shape of a wolf didn't get through her blood.

»Say, do you maybe know where Cassian is?« I asked and stared at my feet as I circled while asking her that question. It was possible to move them, but my leg still throbbed in pain even though most of it just felt numb, which made the throbbing more uncomfortable.

»The young man who didn't leave your side in all those days you were asleep?« she questioned and turned to me after finishing with the measurements.

Amused, I pulled my brows up. She knew who Cassian was – the future Alpha of our pack.

Because I wore short pants, she could look at my thigh where I got shot right away and unwrapped the bandage.

»Exactly,« I confirmed and cut off when I saw the two bullet wounds.

Doctor Taylor had the opinion that my healing was pretty good but I still looked like a Swiss cheese. Normally, if those were normal bullet wounds and not ones poisoned with wolfsbane, they would have healed in a few hours and after that if everything went well nothing would be seen afterwards.

But those two holes were swollen red and had a yellowish crust that looked more liquid than anything else. I treated patients with similar wounds in Canada but seeing those on oneself was more terrible than I thought.

»They got infected...« she mumbled and sprayed some disinfectant on the holes. Hissing I wanted to pull my leg away but it was still too numb so I mostly had no control over it and couldn't even pull it away.

What the hell was this?! I couldn't move it and it was numb but I could feel pain?!

»Your friend told the other nurses that he needed to go home. He said something about a deal with his father and you waking up and some future responsibilities. Now that I think about it, wasn't the young man the future Alpha of your pack? But you are the Beta, how can it be that you became his mate? After all, you two hated each other, as I heard it back then.«
