Side-Story: 17 - A new stage of life - Part 4

Fynn

It had been a few years since Toby had died.

I woke up with exhaustion torturing my body. My bunk mates were already getting up and I dragged myself up to follow their lead.

»Fynnick,« my bunkmate that slept above me called me and I watched him come closer with bleary eyes. »What?« I snarled.

If our daily routine wouldn't be I would be still dreaming about Toby. Fucking bastards.

My bunkmate had a name but I wasn't up to the idea of remembering any of these guys. He laughed and threw something on my bed while I got up and put my clothes on. »There was a letter for you in the mail today.«

How the fuck had they even delivered mail to this hell-like place...

I made my bed ready before the lieutenant came for the daily prep speech. Only after cleaning up my nightly mess, I grabbed the letter and read over the first few lines. It was a letter from the three siblings.

Hey, Fynn,

We haven't heard from you for some time and you probably don't even have time or the nerve to look at your phone.

Even if I had the time and the nerves, I no longer had a phone in my possession. It broke some time ago and I had no chance to get a new one out here.

Anyway, we wanted to check on you. It has been almost fifteen years since you left after you know what.

Fifteen years already? I was stunned. Time flew and my body didn't age. But my split soul grew more exhausted with each passing day.

If you have the chance to take any kind of vacation, we would love to meet up with you. But we also know it's difficult to get away from your stationed place. You are right in the warzone, right?

Death left and right with each day. My bunk mates were dying. Maybe they lived for another day only to die the next day. And here I was, still being alive after fourteen years of being stuck in war. One year of getting into the army before being sent to war.

A letter to us would be nice too. We miss you.

Sean, Zack & Leandra

The three siblings were the only ones that were still left in this world. All our other friends had died by now. Of course, their children lived on. Not only Kyran and Cassian had children. But I had no energy to meet them.

I was in this war for one single purpose.

I put the letter away and got up like the others for the daily speech. Our lieutenant came in, he talked to us and then everything else repeated.

We moved across the warzone with tents and cars. My weapon rested on my lap while I checked the plains for enemies.

Our force was not in a normal war - we were some kind of special force. The ones that took the most dangerous missions upon themselves.

»From who was the letter? You never get letters, Fynnick.« I hadn't taken my eyes from the view to answer my bunkmate. »Friends.«

»You have friends?« He almost sounded shocked. But no wonder. I wasn't the type to get close to any of them. They would die either way. Either the war took them or their age would.
