-Jhené's POV-

The warning bell rang as I was walking to class. I groaned, picking up the pace. The classroom was very far away and I couldn't afford to be late to History class the fourth time this week.

I started running to class and entered right when the bell rang. I quickly sat in my seat, in front of my best friend Steph. He gave me a smile and nod.

"Glad you were able to join us on time today, Ms. Jhené,"the teacher said, making the class laugh.

I sighed,"C'mon Mr. Jefferson. I had basketball practice right before this. I barely had enough time to change." "Well that's too bad for you, captain,"he replied. I decided not to argue with him.

Mr. Jefferson instructed,"So, today class, you will be doing some textbook work. Go to page 78 and answer all the questions. Full sentences please. That includes you, Mr. Curry. Just writing "idk" on half the questions is not acceptable." Everyone laughed at Steph, who just shrugged.

I held my hand up.

"Yes Jhené?"

"Can we please have class outside? It's a nice day today,"I smiled. "Since you asked so nicely, no." I huffed, crossing my arms.

The whole class insisted we go outside until Mr. Jefferson finally cracked. "Okay, fine. We'll go outside." The class cheered, filing out of the class.

Steph put his arm around me as we were walking and said,"Hey Jhené. What's up?"

"Hi Steph. You coming to my game tonight, right?"I asked.

He replied,"Obviously. I've got to support my bestie." "Aw, how cute,"I cooed, poking his cheek.

That night, as my fellow teammates and I were warming up right before the game, I looked out into the bleachers.

Lots of people had showed up, since it was an important game for the school. It would qualify us for the state championship.

I saw Steph, and grinned. He was sitting with some of his teammates from the boys basketball team. I giggled at the sign he was holding up: Jhené is the cutest #20

Steph is such a good friend, and yes we have the same jersey number. Friendship goals, am I right? (A/N: Steph was #20 in high school, so I don't wanna hear anyone say his number is 30)

The game started, and by halftime I already had 18 points. In the fourth quarter with 2 minutes left, my team was leading the score 87-72. I somehow managed to muster up 34 points by then.

As the clock ticked down to one minute left, the whole school was basically bursting with excitement. That obviously fired me up even more.

As I jumped up to grab a rebound, a girl on the opposing team pushed into me, causing me to fall awkwardly on my ankle.

I felt immediate pain, laying down. I clutched my ankle and couldn't help but scream. The referee blew a whistle to temporarily stop the game as my coach came running up to me.

Everyone started whispering. "Is she okay?" "Did she break her ankle?" "I really hope she's okay." "We need her."

Coach asked,"Jhené, are you okay? What hurts?" I could barely speak. "My ankle, it kills,"I choked out.

Steph came running over to me. He checked up on me, and I could see the worry in his eyes.

I couldn't take the pain anymore and eventually just passed out.

I woke up in the hospital, and immediately felt pain. "Ow!"I exclaimed.

Steph came into view. "Hey princess. How are you?"he asked, smoothing down my hair. I couldn't help but blush at his nickname for me.

I saw my ankle in a splint and asked,"What happened? Did we win? Are we going to the finals?"

I quickly tried to sit up, but Steph pushed me back down gently. "Jhené, don't do that. Just relax. I'll tell you everything."

I sighed,"Okay. Tell me what happened. I know I fell..."

"Yeah, you did. Really badly. Jhené, you uh, broke your ankle,"he said. My eyes widened. "Are you kidding me, Steph?"

He replied,"I'm not kidding. But you were a fricking beast on the court! The team won because of you. They dedicated the whole thing to you. And universities are already planning scholarships because of your last senior basketball performance."

I couldn't believe what he just said. I teared up from happiness. "Oh my god,"I whispered.

Steph smiled and said,"You did that, Jhené. You're amazing."

I spent the next few days at the hospital, resting my ankle and giving it all the support I could.

Steph came and visited me every day after school, making me love him more and more each time.

When I was finally able to go back to school with the help of crutches, everyone treated me like I was the queen or something. It was so strange but flattering. Steph was beside my side through it all.

In the morning, I struggled to get books out of my locker. The bell rang and I really had to get to class.

Steph came to save the day. "Let me help you, my princess,"he said, grabbing all my books. "Thank you, kind sir,"I grinned.

Steph realized we wouldn't make it to History class in time if I kept slowly making my way with crutches. That is why he handed me the books and just picked me up.

I exclaimed,"Steph, it's okay! Put me down!"

But he denied,"No, I know it's hard for you to walk. Just let me carry you. It's faster and less painful for you."

I tightly clutched my crutches and books as we made it to class. Mr. Jefferson didn't even make any remarks this time!

Steph basically followed me around, doing everything for me. It was the sweetest thing. He would carry me around, hold my things for me, make kids move out of the way for me, basically anything he thought I needed. And it seemed like he genuinely enjoyed doing that all for me.

One day, as Steph was carrying me to his car after school so we could head to his house, I asked him a question. "Steph, why are you so happy to do all this for me?"

He chuckled, placing me in the passenger's seat. "Jhené, you're the most amazing person ever. I want to help you always."

I waited for him to get in the driver's seat before saying,"That's super sweet of you, but you can honestly just stop. It seems tiring."

As Steph drove, he said,"No, no. I love doing all these things for you. It allows me to spend more time with you, and make sure you're well. I just want to take care of you and protect you. And I certainly don't want you being hurt."

I couldn't stop myself from blushing at his sweetness. "Steph, you're the sweetest,"I sighed, putting my hand on his shoulder.

He glanced at me for a second before looking at the road again. "Uh Jhené, I really want to keep spending all this time with you. So will you...will you be my girlfriend?"

I couldn't believe he had said that. I've certainly had feelings for Steph, but never acted on them. I had no idea he felt the same way. "Yes, of course,"I grinned.

"Oh my god. Thank god. I was worried you would say no,"he chuckled, glancing at me before resting his eyes on the road again. He mumbled,"I would kiss you right now, but I'm kind of driving so I'll do that at my house."

I laughed, shaking my head. "Okay, sounds like a plan."
