Avery’s POV

The rest of that week went along slowly but finally I was able to forget about my messed up life and try to relax and act normal for a change. It was rather strange to think that today was actually my three month and a half anniversary from getting to camp.
Rachel had only been at camp for a week and had settled in nicely. Her and Annabeth became fast friends. I thought it was strange that they got along so well because Annabeth was more of the mellow kid while Rachel was spunky and overdramatic occasionally but I couldn’t have been more wrong. They got along really well and quickly became best friends instantly. I don’t think I ever saw a moment when they weren’t together.
I was in the stables brushing Ace when suddenly I felt something brush past my ear. Pausing I lifted my left hand to my ear and felt that my left earring was missing. Smirking I continued back to brushing Ace. “Give it back Luke.” I said.
If I wasn’t the only one in the stables, I would looked crazy, and looked like I was talking to myself, but I knew that Luke was behind my missing earring. He’s had this knack of stealing everything of mine. Honestly he was really good and I usually wouldn’t catch him until hours later when he ‘casually’ asked if I was missing something.
Chuckling was heard from the stall next to me and I turned to see Luke’s head pop up into sight while he rested his elbows on the wood on the side of the stable. “Dang, I touched you didn’t I?” He asked.
“Rookie mistake.” I grinned then held my hand out, my face feigning anger. “Now, give it back.”
A smirk crossed Luke’s face. “Why don’t you come and get it?”
“Lukeeeeee.” I drew his name out and rolled my eyes but he was serious about not giving it back to me. Luke jumped up on the stall side and sat on it, holding my earing in his hands, examining it.
“Averyyyyy.” Luke said back to me, the smirk not leaving his face and his eyes still on the earring in his hands. He looked up, his blue eyes shimmering with mischief. “Come on, Avery. Come and get it.”
Taking the challenge I set the brush down and jumped for Luke’s hand to which he moved right out of the way before I could get it. “Missed.” He laughed then jumped off and ran out of the stall down the stable. I laughed too and ran out of Ace’s stall then chased after him.
For almost 5 or 6 minutes, Luke teased me with my earrings, holding it high in his hands so that I couldn’t reach it. I was tall, 5 foot 11, but Luke was about 6 foot 3 and every time I jumped for my earring, he moved his hand up just a tad bit. After about the hundredth time of Luke moving it just out of my grasp, I put my hands on my hips and gave him a stern look. “What’s it gonna take to get my earring back?” I asked.
Luke smirked almost cruelly and suddenly I was worried about giving him that advantage. He could make me do anything. That glint in his eyes made my stomach feel hallow and suddenly I thought that maybe I could live without that earring- except for the fact that Grey gave me those earrings for my birthday one year.
“Give me a kiss.” Luke said and immediately the worried feeling of mine was gone.
“Seriously?” I asked while he just shrugged.
“I could always make you streak naked and run into the lake. I wouldn’t complain to that.”
My eyes widened at the appalling thought and how easily he said that. I’ve learned that Luke was nowhere NEAR as innocent as I was. He was always making suggestive comments that made my cheeks turn fiery red. “Alright I’ll do it.” I said, my eyes still wide from his other ‘suggestion’. Luke laughed and leaned his head down, puckering his lips.
Rolling my eyes I leaned up and gave him a quick peck then jumped back before he could deepen the kiss. “Give it back now.” I said, smiling from teasing him.
“You’re not getting your earring back for that kind of a kiss.” Luke told me then grabbed my arms with lightning speed and dipped me towards the ground causing a huge gasp to escape my lips. I clutched on to him because without his hands I would make a hard fall on the ground. “Give me a real one.” He demanded then threatened. “Or I drop you.”
“Alright, alright!” I yelled, frantically, scared that he would actually drop me. “Just put me back up.”
Chuckling, Luke did as he was told and put me upright while I gripped his shirt tightly still scared he was going to drop me. He laughed again, “Come on, Avery. Kiss me or else I’ll go back to dropping you.”
“Fine, fine, alright, you win.” Luke seemed to like winning a lot cuz his face got really cocky. A plan started to come in my own mind so I wrapped my hands around Luke’s neck and looked around to check that no one was watching, we still haven’t told anyone that we were dating, then I kissed him gently. Luke’s smirk came back on his face but when I started to kiss him, he dropped it and kissed me back, hard. Luke was really touchy ever since we confessed we liked each other but I would be lying if I said I didn’t like it.
When we pulled away Luke was smiling and gave me another long kiss then pulled back. “Gods, I can’t tell you how much I love kissing you.” He said and I blushed a deep red, burying my face in his shirt while he laughed and wrapped his arms around me.
My face was buried in his shirt so he couldn’t see the smirk that was climbing onto my face. “Hey Luke?” I said and looked up at him, batting my eyelashes innocently. “Are you missing anything?”
            Confusion crossed Luke’s face, “What?”
I laughed and showed him my right hand that held his necklace. His eyes got wide and his hands zipped towards his neck to find that I really did have his necklace. “How the Hades did you-? You took that? When?”
Another laugh escaped my lips from his surprise. “I took it when we were kissing.”
“But I didn’t- I didn’t feel anything- how did you… what?” He rubbed his neck and looked dumbfounded. “Gods, maybe you’re a Hermes kid after all.” He joked.
His words made my stomach sink as I remembered what I was trying to forget. There was yet another God that I had powers/abilities from that I shouldn’t A few weeks ago we had found out that I had a knack for battle strategies at the capture the flag. Mark me up for an ability from another Goddess; Athena.
Luke must have noticed my kinda spaced out and dreary mood because he pulled me an arm’s length away from him. “Hey,” he asked softly, his voice laced with deep concern which made my heart melt into a puddle. “Are you alright?”
“Yeah,” I said and tried to shake off the sinking feeling in my stomach. “Yeah I’m fine.”
He didn’t seem convinced so I changed the subject.
“What do the beads mean anyway?” I asked, studying the different beads on the necklace.
“Each bead stands for a year at camp. It’s kinda like a… trophy I guess, of surviving another year. Each bead has a symbol on it that was a huge part of camp that year.”
I gave the necklace back to Luke, finally understanding why everyone had one. While he was putting it back on I asked, “Will I get one?”
“Yeah, every camper gets one each year. You should get on at the end of the year.”
            “Cool.” I said smiling.
Both Luke and I turned our heads at the sudden motion from the front stable doors to find Grey walking in. “Hey Grey.” Luke said casually only accidently scaring her. Her hand flew to her heart from being startled.
“Gods Luke you scared m…” She trailed off when she caught my eyes. We stared at each other for a moment while her eyes were wide. She suddenly started to speak all at once, “Oh I just remember I…uh... forgot something…yeah. Yeah I forgot something. Uh…Bye!”
Even faster than she had come in, she bolted out of the stables and I couldn’t help but have a weight in my stomach from her leaving so fast. Luke noticed my crestfallen expression and heard my deep sigh. “What’s the matter?” He asked, “I thought you and Grey are best friends?”
“I’m not so sure anymore.” I muttered softly. “She’s been ignoring me ever since the water incident.”
Luke noticed that I was getting upset so he gently took me in his arms, “Hey,” He said quietly. “I’m sure that it will all work itself out.”
I smiled up at Luke and leaned up to softly kiss his lips. “Thank you Luke.”
He smirked, “I’d do anything for my girlfriend.” I blushed, still not being able to realize how much I loved that coming off his lips from him.
Suddenly the door, once again, flew open making Luke and I fly away from each other. We still hadn’t told anyone about us being together and as guilty as it made me feel, I still knew it was for the better.  The doors swung open to reveal one of Luke’s best friends, Zach.
The Pegasus’ reared up from being startled and Zach looked just as scared as they were but once everyone had recovered, Zach panted, “It’s time for the campfire.”
Luke raised an eyebrow, “From how fast you were running I thought you were going to say that the camp was being attacked by monsters.”
Zach scoffed. “I was running because you guys are about 20 minutes late.”
Both Luke and I looked at each other at the same time, our expressions the same; panicked. We both looked at Zach and immediately Luke and I bolted out of the stables to get to the campfire with Zach hot on our tails. If you were late to a campfire, you get kitchen duty and it isn’t fun to work there.
“Why didn’t you get us sooner?” Luke hissed at Zach while the three of us ran side by side by side.
“Sorry! I’m not cabin leader, I thought someone would be more responsible.” Zach said rolling his eyes.
Luke jabbed Zach in the ribs making him stumble to the ground while Luke laughed and I tried not to. Zach, being a son of Hermes with an athletic built, was able to catch up to us pretty quickly all while muttering curses at Luke.
When we finally started to come towards the campfire, we slowed down and tried to casually sit in the back row so no one would notice us walk in late. Just when we thought we had made a clear, we both jumped when we heard Chiron whisper in our ears, “Kitchen duty for you two.”
Both Luke and I cursed but continued to join along in the campfire. Annabeth suddenly stood up after the end of a camp song, and dragging Rachel by her elbow. I raised an eyebrow at the panicked expression on Rachel’s face as well as the murderous look in her eyes directed to Annabeth while Annabeth just smirked and continued to drag her friend towards the middle of the circle.
“I have an announcement!” Annabeth’s voice rang out while ever camper grew quiet, curious as to what Annabeth was doing. “Rachel…” Annabeth said, looking innocently at her best friend yet with a smirk on her face. “has volunteered to sing a song for us.”
Annabeth shoved Rachel forwards while Rachel’s eyes were wide. “Actually I don’t.” She quickly said and was going to sit back down but Annabeth jumped up and held her there.
“Oh no you’re not!” Annabeth’s strong voice said. She suddenly turned towards me and a sparkle of an idea came into Annabeth’s grey eyes. “Avery!” She called to me and immediately everyone’s heads were towards me, making me blush. “Make her do it!” Annabeth told me.
I opened my mouth to tell her I wouldn’t use my charm speak to make her sing but Annabeth gave me such a glare that I snapped my mouth shut in an instant and bit my lip then looked at the panicked and wide eyed Rachel. “Sorry, Rachel.” I said. I was too afraid of what Annabeth could do to me if I didn’t do what she asked me to. Even though she was 12, you wouldn’t want her on your bad side.
“Sing whatever song Annabeth wanted you to sing, Rachel.” I commanded and immediately a fogged expression came on Rachel’s face.
You could tell that Rachel still knew what she was doing because she walked up and gave a deathly glare at Annabeth that should have sent her to in flames to Tartarus. Rachel turned back towards everyone and closed her eyes tight before gritting, “Lee?” Immediately our Apollo cabin leader answered. “Could you play the song…” She gritted her teeth more. “Only Hope from ‘A Walk to Remember’?”
Lee grinned and immediately a piano was rolled up by several Ares kids under the order of Annabeth. As soon as the piano came into view, Lee hopped on the stool and got ready, smiling at Rachel.
“I hate you all.” Rachel muttered under her breath as Lee started to play the song. After the intro was done Rachel took her que and started to sing Only Hope. [A/N: If you haven’t heard this song, it is absolutely incredible!!! Mandy Moore sings it and is AMAZING!]
Rachel started out singing quiet and shy from the begging of the song but by the end of the song, she started to feel comfortable and totally blew everyone away! When she finished with the last of the humming, everyone was so shocked then all at once we stood up and cheered as loud as we could!
For a twelve year old, that was the most beautiful singing I’ve ever heard in my entire life!
All the campers were going crazy while even Mr. D was clapping. Rachel was smiling while her cheeks were bright red from all the positive feedback. Suddenly everyone stopped clapping and cheering and instead had huge gasps come from everyone. I took a step back when I saw a glowing sun with a lyre and arrow appear over her head.
Luke smiled and walked forward until he was holding Rachel’s shoulder. “All hail Rachel Hemmings, daughter of…” He looked at her and smiled. “Apollo.”
The Apollo campers raced forwards and started to all talk at once introducing themselves and telling her how great she sang. Rachel laughed and smiled along with them until Luke finally quieted them all down. “Since Lord Apollo has claimed you, you’ll be moving to the Apollo cabin. Lee?” He asked and Lee jumped up in front of Rachel. “Lee will show you around, Rachel.”
“Welcome to the Apollo cabin.” Lee congratulated while they shook hands.
            “Thanks.” Rachel smiled.
Chiron stomped his food to the ground to gather everyone’s attention. Once everyone was quiet, he smiled at Rachel. “Congratulations Miss. Hemmings.” She smiled back and said a thank you before Chiron turned back towards the rest of the campers. “Curfew is in 10 minutes campers.” Everyone started to scramble off towards their cabins while Rachel and I waited for further instructions, since Chiron had motioned for us to wait.  Chiron told Rachel to go back to the Hermes cabin and have me help her move all her things into the Apollo cabin where she would be staying.
On the way towards the Apollo cabin, Rachel was ecstatic and couldn’t keep her energy contained. “Can you believe that I got claimed?” She squealed jumping up and down as we walked. “By Apollo too! That is so cool!”
I smiled. “I’m happy for you Rachel.”
“Can you believe that I got claimed in less than a week?” she asked, “I must be pretty special to have been claimed so early! I mean you’ve been here for more than 3 months right? And I’ve been here for almost 4 days!”
I know that she didn’t mean to be rude to me but that stuck with me through the whole time when I walked her towards her new cabin and when I walked back towards my cabin by myself.
When she said the comparison, that she had been here less than a week and I had been here more than 3 months, I couldn’t help but feel useless. I mean, was I not important enough to have been claimed quickly like Rachel was? Even though my time was short compared to most kids in the Hermes cabin, I couldn’t help but feel bitter towards my godly parent. My whole life I had been in an horrible orphanage with a horrible living condition, I was abused until a year ago, I was 17, which was four years over when I should have been here- I mean, after all I’ve been through, shouldn’t I have been claimed quickly?
From my sudden bitterness, I picked up a rock and threw it as far as I could to try to get rid of a little frustration.
“Little Star?” I heard Luna say. I turned my silver eyes towards the darkness and immediately saw her with my special kind of vision. It was strange to be able to see better in the dark, that to be able to see in the sunlight.
“Hi Luna.” I said, not bothering to mask my voice from the unsureity that I felt.
Luna tilted her head and trotted towards me, nuzzling against me, her blue eyes shining with worry. “What is troubling you?” she asked.
I opened my mouth to tell her but I just shook my head. It was silly of me to be so upset about this. “It’s nothing.” I told her. Luna could tell that I was lying and narrowed her eyes at me. “Honestly Luna just, just leave it alone.” I started to walk faster towards the cabin and Luna finally seemed to realize that I wanted some without talking.
After an hour or two of lying in bed, I still couldn’t get those thoughts out of my head. I closed my eyes and tried to will the thoughts away but I only ended up thinking about them more. I let out a deep breath through my nose while my eyes were closed with pain. Slowly, I opened my eyes and tilted my head to see Luna sleeping next to me. Bringing my hand out towards her, I pet her silky fur for a moment before finally realizing that I just needed some space. I was starting to feel Closter phobic.
Trying not to make lots of movements, so I wouldn’t wake Luna up, I moved the sheets from my body and quietly got out of bed, making my way towards the door. Once I was outside, I immediately started to climb up the cabin until I made it to the roof.
When I finally made it to the roof I laid down with my hands over my stomach with my left leg straight and my right leg bend so that my knee was in the air but my foot was flat on the roof. I let out a sigh of relief from being able to be away from everything. There was a slight breeze that went gently through my hair, soothingly. Suddenly, I bolted up so I sat straight like a board, my eyes wide.
The wind blowing through my hair reminded me of something. It sparked a memory. The memory was fuzzy but I remember someone running their hands through my hair when I was little. I remember that feeling. But who used to do that? It wasn’t someone at the orphanage, I know that.
I ran my hands through the side of my hair wondering how I knew that memory and where it was from. It wasn’t just my imagination though, I remember that. I remember someone running their hands through my hair when I was stressed out. I remember the calming jester. I remember someone whispering soothing words when I was little and I was crying. I remember that...
My mind strained to remember something more to that memory but as much as I tried to hand on to it, it slipped through my grasp like sand.
After the strange memory sparked up in my mind, my heart was beating fast and my breathing was abnormal. Where was that from? I asked myself, wishing I could find more to that memory. It felt like it was right there, that the memory was just out of my grasp, I could almost taste it but I couldn’t’ reach it.
Frustrated I ran my hands through my hair and rested my elbows on my, now bend, knees with my head in-between my knees as I tried to steady my breathing.
Not being able to remember that memory frustrated me, I knew that it was important, it was a key to something that was huge but I couldn’t remember it.
I closed my eyes from frustration and groaned before I laid myself back down in my previous position before I had the ignition in my brain from the memory. I know it was a memory too. I wasn’t imagining it.
Once the thought of that memory left my brain, not completely but almost completely, I opened my eyes and looked at the stars. I was naming each of the constellations, only realizing later that I somehow knew all them by name though no one had ever told me them in my life, when Luke appeared.
“Avery?” Luke asked and I moved my head to look at him but then laid back down, continuing naming the constellations in my head. Luke climbed up the rest of the way onto the roof and laid down beside me. “I thought I heard you get out of bed.”
            “Sorry did I wake you?”
He shook his head, “No, you didn’t.”
I nodded then continued my gaze at the stars only having the same thoughts from what Rachel said, coming back into my mind.  Luke must have noticed that I was spacing off and looking upset because he sat up and put his hand on mine. I opened my eyes from the touch and stared at Luke’s bright blue eyes that were swirling with concern. “Avery…” Luke said softly. “What’s the matter?”
Closing my eyes, I hesitated, thinking that I shouldn’t share my burdens with him but eventually my heart won in telling him.
Turning my head to look up at him, I sat up then hugged my knees as I looked up at the stars, them somehow giving me a comforting feeling. “How long do you think I’ll be here?” I asked, softly.
            “Where? At camp?”
“No, the Hermes cabin. How long do you think that I’ll be in the Hermes cabin?” At the end of the sentence, I tore my gaze away from the stars and looked over at him to see Luke’s caring expression disappear, instead having his expression darken.
“The Gods don’t really care very much when it comes to claiming their kids, Avery.” Luke said bitterly, looking out in front of him, not meeting my gaze. “You should probably realize that now. The Gods, however great everyone makes them seem, don’t care about us. We’re just their pawn. We’re the little ‘heroes’ that have to do things for us. They couldn’t care less about if we die of not, even our own parents.” Luke turned back towards me, his eyes dark, not their sparkling blue. “The gods don’t care about us, Avery. They don’t care about their kids, especially when it comes to claiming them.”
I moved to a more comfortable position and turned more towards Luke, my face confused as I remembered that Grover said that they were just busy and that’s why they didn’t claim us. “But Grover said that the Gods didn’t claim us very often because they were-”
Luke cut me off, “‘Busy?’” He asked mockingly and laughed though it was humorless. “They aren’t that busy Avery. Trust me. They could claim every single one of us if they wanted. They choose not to. Maybe it’s a lack of laziness, but I take that of not caring. Grover was just trying to sugar coat it, every does. The Gods couldn’t care less about you and me. Only a handful of the kids here were actually supposed to be born, Avery. The Gods come down to the mortal world, get laid with some mortal then leave. They don’t expect to have the mortal get pregnant or get pregnant themselves, and after they find out? The Gods just leave, not caring about the baby, and the Goddess only tolerate the baby until they have them, after that, they drop the baby off to the dad and never come back.” He scoffed, “It’s disgusting really. I mean some of the God and Goddess’ actually love the mortal and some mean to have the kid and others don’t. Either way Avery, it sure seems like not caring to me. The Gods know that they would eventually have to leave, it’s the law. So why try to fall in love or burden a mortal with a kid when they know they have to leave. If they don’t claim you, they are trying to say that you were a mistake, something that wasn’t supposed to happen. They don’t care, Avery. Once you realize that, it will be easier.”
Tears were weld up in my eyes from what he was saying. If everything was true, then was I just some mistake that the Gods were hoping would just be killed off eventually?
After a minute, Luke turned his head towards me and saw the tears falling from my eyes. His hatred expression towards the Gods disappeared and the loving and caring look reappeared on his face. He pulled me in his arms so that my legs were wrapped around his waist and my head was in the crook of his neck. Luke held me tightly and rubbed my back, “I’m sorry Avery. I didn’t mean to hurt you but I’d rather have you realize this now then try to hope for something your whole life. I’m sorry, shhh….. It’s alright. I’ll be here for you. I won’t leave you like the Gods left us. I’ll be here with you.”
I pulled back and wiped my tears. “Do you p-promise?” I asked like a little kid.
Luke gave me a loving look and wiped away a tear, cupping my jaw. “Avery I would do anything for you.” He then kissed my forehead letting his lips linger as he whispered, “I promise that I will never leave you like the Gods left us. I promise, Avery. I will always be here for you, I will always keep you safe, I promise.”
My eyes looked up at his, shimmering and I leaned forward, hugging him with a smile on my face, grateful that I could count of someone through everything. He hugged my back and shifted his chin on my head as if trying to get me closer towards him.
Once we had been hugging for a while I pulled away and sat back down on the roof, facing him. I had to ask something. “Luke…?” He hummed In response so I took a deep breath and said, “You don’t like the Gods very much do you?” Luke’s expression immediately transformed into a dark, resentful look after my question. “Why?” I asked.
There was a pause for a while. Luke closed his eyes tightly as if trying to get rid of a painful memory. When he opened his eyes and turned to me, his expression was still resentful but his blue eyes were drenched with sadness. “I’ve had a hard past with the Gods, Avery.” He took my hand and held it up to his thick scar on his cheek under his right eye. “This scar,” He said and moved my finger down to trace his scar slowly ‘til it reached his chin. “Is from the Gods.”
I quickly looked up and met Luke’s eyes, my eyes surprised asking how they could do such a horrible thing. “I was ready for a quest,” Luke explained, “I was so ready for a quest.” He said longingly, remembering how desperately he wanted one.  “Last year, my dad, Hermes,” He said bitterly, “Gave me a quest but it was disgraceful. My quest was to take a Golden Apple of Immortality but that had already been done. My ‘dad’, was just giving me a quest to get me out of his hair. He only gave it to me to satisfy me, he did a poor job of it. During the quest, I failed.  And to prove that I failed, I have this scar to remind me and everyone else.” His voice was hard and I put my hand so that my palm was on his cheek. Luke closed his eyes and leaned against my cheek. Then continued, his voice less angry but the more he spoke the more upset he got. “Hermes left my mom and I when I was little. It was when I needed him most. He did something to my mom that made her…” He shivered, “Not normal. It was horrible. She was still my mom but she had a curse on her that my ‘father’ gave her. And after he gave her the curse, he left. He left me alone with her, with that monster when I was little. He abandoned me when I need him most.” By the time he was done, his first were clenched as was his jaw.
Luke’s blue eyes looked back at my silver ones and his expression softened. He took his hand and rested it on my hand that was on his cheek.
“Can’t you just forgive him, Luke.” I pleaded, not used to seeing him so angry.
The son of Hermes closed his eyes tightly. “I can’t- I can’t forgive him for what he’s done to me, Avery. I’m sorry.” His eyes bore into mine, pleading for me to understand and immediately I did. I didn’t know everything that happened in his life but I could understand being abandoned. My Godly parent left me when I was little. They could have prevented me from being abused and from giving me the horrible life that I had.
I hugged Luke tightly and closed my eyes tightly, trying to relish the feeling of his arms around me and my arms around him. “I’m sorry, Luke.” I told him, a tear trickling down my eye from seeing him in pain. “I’m sorry for what your dad did. I’m so sorry.”
“Hey, hey hey,” Luke said and pulled me away so he could see my face. “It’s not your fault. It’s not your fault, Avery. You couldn’t have done anything. I’m just glad that you’re here now. I’m glad that I have you now.” He pulled me back into a hug while I buried my head in the crook of his neck.
Maybe I couldn’t trust the Gods, but I could always trust Luke.
