With how many families she lived with, Shelly doesn't even know where her name came from, it's just the earliest memory she has of being called anything. The benefit of bouncing around Los Angeles like a yo-yo's she eventually met a few kids at Garfield who knew how to pronounce her name. She met Robbie before their classes together at Garfield though. Canelo took pity on her and gave her a job, and from then on there wasn't a single person alive she spent more time with -- or wanted to. But after she moved on to a new home and Robbie dropped out, shit fell apart pretty quick. She might've ended up in juvie for a minute but even without a friend she worked harder than humanly possible and got back out in way under a year. She got out in time to graduate with honors but not in time to ever see Robbie again, least for a few more years
The next time Shelly sees Robbie, Robbie doesn't see her, not really. She's been in countless situations that got her adrenaline pumping, but she got comfortable at a good job and when Fifth Street comes in and holds the place up, she's not in control of her responses anymore. She feels something else controlling her body and it's both foreign and familiar. She gets too caught up in whatever evolution's happening inside her and pays the price. By the time the Good Samaritan gets there, all Robbie finds is the last Fifth Street boys he needed to hunt down, a few more dead and maimed in strange ways, and Shelly from high school's body. And the last thing Ixchel sees before she involuntarily finds her way to some hell dimension is Robbie Reyes on fire
