She was one of the successful subjects Protogen was most proud of. But when she escapes from them, she's inarguably their biggest liability. For years, she hides out on Ceres, or more accurately, the OPA hides her. She's Anderson Dawes's family and he's hers. If weren't for him, she wouldn't be able to make the relatively honest living she does. But when a piece of the Belt breaks off and starts moving on its own, she can't fake that regular life anymore. If she didn't ignore how different she is for so long, then maybe she'd be able to make sense of the Protomolecule -- or even its engineers -- calling out to her. If she tries to ignore the extrasolar entity trying to connect with her now, she might go insane. So there's no other option but to leave and follow the Protomolecule, wherever it takes her.
