Requested by tomhollandswife09: Y/N has PTSD from past trauma of seeing her best friend killed, so after being rescued by the Avengers, she becomes mute. She doesn't talk until Peter joins the team, and learns sign language to talk to her. They start to like each other and after being friends for a while, Peter finally asks her out at an Avengers' dinner, and everyone hears, and celebrates.

*Okay, so this should become obvious quickly but just in case it doesn't, any speech that's in italics is people using sign language to talk to each other. There's one bit that's all italics, but that's quite obviously not signing when you get to it (the context will tell you what it is lol) so apart from that bit, all speech in italics is sign language. As always, thank you, and enjoy :)*

I sat on my bed, my eyes on my laptop in front of me as I did my homework.

"Y/N, Mr Stark wants to see you in the control room, urgently, please." FRIDAY spoke, making me look up at the intercom. I sighed and rolled my eyes, my mind wondering what my mentor and saviour needed now as I stood from my bed and headed out of my room. I headed into the elevator and pressed the button for the control room, the glass box lowering and getting me there within seconds as the doors opened again. I stepped out and my eyebrows furrowed. Tony and the boy looked over their shoulders at me as they heard me come in. And immediately, it felt like everything stopped. I gulped at the boy, his gorgeous eyes wavering as he stood up straight and looked at me properly. The most beautiful hazel curls that I'd ever seen occupied his head, a few stray wisps curling over his equally stunning chocolate eyes that made me want to get lost in them. Despite the boy wearing an open shirt over what looked to be a science pun t-shirt, I could tell that his biceps and arms were insane. And, well, I was enjoying the view.

"Ah, Y/N, there you are. I wanted to introduce you to the newest member of our team, Peter Parker." Tony smiled proudly as he looked at the boy.

"Hey, i-it's nice to meet you." Peter chuckled nervously. My heart fluttered at how shy the boy clearly was, making me give him a small smile as I raised my hand and waved at him.

"S-so, um, what do you do? What's your, um...thing?" He smiled. I bit my lip and looked at Tony, making Peter's eyebrows furrow.

"I'm sorry, did I say something wrong?" He gulped as he also looked at my mentor.

"No, no, it's not you, kid. Y/N's mute. She CAN talk, but she hasn't since we took her in a year ago. Anyway, her 'thing', as you so graciously put it, is that she's an incredible fighter. Red room standard without the red room." Tony nodded.

"Oh, that's so cool." Peter smiled as he looked back at me.

"Yeah, it comes in handy." I signed with a nod. The boy's eyebrows furrowed.

"What did she say?" He asked as he looked back at Tony.

"I don't know, none of us have mastered signing yet." Tony shrugged. Peter's face dropped, the boy's eyes drifting back to me as he looked at me with a sad gaze.

"Oh...I'm so sorry, that must be so lonely for you." He mumbled. I playfully rolled my eyes and shrugged as a way to reassure him before pointing to behind me.

"This, I know, yes, kiddo, you can leave." Tony nodded, making me return it and give Peter one last smile before heading back into the elevator and pressing the button. I sighed and bit my lip, the box once again taking me back to my room as I thought about the interaction that I'd just had with the seemingly kind and gentle new boy. And the reasons why I hadn't been able to actually talk to him. As we all did, I have a tragic origin story, one that started with my best friend and I having been kidnapped a year and a half ago. I had watched in horror for five and a half months whilst they tortured and humiliated my best friend, all of it eventually leading to her being murdered right in front of me. Luckily, the Avengers had found me and had rescued me two weeks after she had died, and had quickly become my family. But because of my trauma, I no longer felt comfortable talking to anyone at all, and since the team didn't know sign language, I had to admit that it was a pretty lonely existence. But maybe that would be changed by Peter. At least, that was what I was hoping for.
