Requested by xolivia_hx: Y/N and Tom have been together for ten years, and Y/N is starting to get upset that Tom hasn't proposed yet. One night, this results in a fight, during which Tom admits to having planned a romantic proposal with a ring that he had had made. He then proposes to her then and there, and they end the night cuddling and watching movies in bed.
Tom and I sat on our sofa, my legs over his lap and his hand gently massaging my thigh as we watched TV and wound down for the night. I scrolled aimlessly through Instagram, my mind only half paying attention to the posts that had been uploaded since the last time that I checked it as I scrolled. My eyes widened, my finger stopping as I saw one of my friends' most recent post. The one showing off her new engagement ring.
"Tommy, look, Kiera got engaged to her boyfriend!" I squealed as I sat up and showed him the phone. His eyes widened slightly.
"Oh, wow, that's great! Good for them!" He smiled and nodded.
"Isn't the ring beautiful?" I gushed and looked at him as I desperately tried to hint as much as I could without just outright saying what I was thinking.
"Yeah, gorgeous, love." He chuckled before looking back at the TV. I sighed and let my smile drop, my eyes rolling at my beyond clueless boyfriend as I lay back down against the sofa and continued to scroll. Tom and I had been together for ten years, since we were eighteen, and he was truly the love of my life. We had happily lived with each other for eight years now, and we were even beginning to talk about starting a family together. But there was one huge thing that I couldn't get over. And that was the fact that Tom hadn't proposed yet. I had been dropping hints for as long as I could remember, everything from 'accidentally' leaving magazines on their engagement ring advert pages, to making a point to stop at every jeweller's window when we were out and point out all of the rings to my somehow still oblivious boyfriend. To be honest, I wasn't sure what was stopping him. After all, we'd been together for ten years, and so we'd known for a long time that we were it for each other, and we had lived together for a number of those years, so we knew that being with each other as much as we were didn't hurt us as a couple. The only remaining answer that I had for myself was that Tom didn't want to get married, the thought of which broke my heart. Of course, marriage was just a signed piece of paper, I didn't need to be married to Tom, but considering the fact that I knew that he wanted marriage, if he didn't want to marry me...that suggested that it was me that he didn't want. And I couldn't bear the thought of that being the truth. And yet, maybe...it was.
"You're fucking unbelievable, Tom!" I yelled as I stormed into our house, and Tom followed hot on my heels.
"I don't know what you want me to say, love! I don't know what I did wrong!" He shouted back as we both rushed through the house. It was Valentines' Day, and so Tom had taken me out for one of the most romantic meals that we had ever had together. So romantic, that I had thought that this was finally it. He was going to use the most romantic day of the year, bard our anniversary of course, to propose to me. To promise to make me his wife. And yet...he hadn't. Whilst I was incredibly grateful for the gift of the beautiful meal, as well as the simply gorgeous necklace that he had ended up giving me, I had to admit that I was also devastated. The entire night, we'd watched as partner after partner proposed to their significant others, the restaurant filling with gasps and claps every time that the person inevitably said yes. And yet every time, Tom would politely clap and smile before simply going back to his meal, and giving me zero indication that he was going to do the same for me. Which, of course, he hadn't done.
