Dixie Johnson sets her last box down, in her half-empty apartment. She stares out the window that reaches from the floor to the ceiling and admires the San Fransico view. Her soon-to-be Ex-husband Griffin Johnson was standing behind her ready to say goodbye. "This is it." He says tenderly placing the keys to her 2021 Tesla Roadster on the far end of her marble countertop "Yes it is." She turns around to face him, walking slowly and embracing him in a warm secured hug.
They both knew this divorce was bound to happen, for it wasn't that they didn't care for each other just that the relationship in itself was always forced and mandatory. She never wanted to walk down the aisle so young or find a "soulmate" before she started her career but that's what her parents wanted. Griffin and Dixie grew up together. Their parents were best friends and every sense they were little they can recall all the times their parents talked about their wedding day, or prom, or the best suit and the most astonishing dress to wear to the homecoming. It bothered them both for they never saw each other in that way. They had things in common and "dancing" wasn't it.
In fact, both Dixie and Griffin loved surgery ever since they could play with doctor sets for kids they would. The two would proudly say those days paid off for they are now two of the most successful surgeons in the world. To both, their work came first, to which marriage came second, and love like that was entitled to end.
Griffin released from Dixie's captivating hug, which meant more to Dixie than even she knew. He kissed the top of her forehead and smiled. "Until we meet again." He said playfully. Dixie laughed a little and ran to hold the door open for him. He was returning to their hometown in New York. He walked out bluntly and she shut the door peacefully not wanting to wake any neighbors, for bad first impressions was a fear of hers.
She knew she had to clean up her box fulled apartment but she also knew she had a big surgery tomorrow: maybe the biggest one of her career, to which she chose sleep as the best and last decision of the night.
She laid on her mattress with a blanket stationed on top of her aching body. She was going through tomorrow's day. She had to talk to her divorce lawyer about returning to her maiden name. She also heard about a new surgeon coming in from New York, to assist her on the medical procedure everyone was talking about. The energy it was taking to think was draining as her eyes began to close and her thoughts began to evaporate into the reality of the day ahead.
BEEP BEEP BEEP
Dixie's 5:30 a.m. alarm clock broke the silence of her pondering contemplation as her first thought was that she was a single woman. She hadn't been single for as long as she could remember and she frantically enjoyed it. She awoke to the mess she had left herself the following night. She took a quick shower before scrambling through boxes to find an outfit suitable for both work and her lawyer's office.
She grabbed the keys Giffin had left on the counter last night and drove to her favorite coffee shop before arriving at Ms. Williams's assigned service. "Dixie Damelio." Was the woman who walked out of the beautifully established property. She loved the name and wondered exactly what was going through her mind the day she decided to unclaim it.
As she approached the building she'd been coming to for the past 5 years she noticed a rather unfamiliar face. She knew everyone who worked at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital which is why to recall the man standing before her obliterated her memory like a mouse with a cookie. The man smiled freely and extend his hand to which Dixie shook with pleasure. "Hi," The man said with a gentle expression. "I'm Noah Beck, and I will be assisting you on your surgery this afternoon." She smiled and nodded saying her name before releasing her hand from his surprisingly soft grip.
