For some reason, half of this chapter was deleted, so I've had to rewrite the ending ad re-add the QOTD.

She stared at the plain, white-washed wall ahead of her, thinking about all those times she should have told him that she loved him. All those times she held her tongue, waiting for him to say it when really, she should have swallowed her pride and said those three simple words because now, she couldn't say them at all.

Yes, Reader, Isla stared at the plain, white-washed ahead of her, thinking about all those times she should have told Connor that she lived him.

The doctor that had visited her earlier had been kind enough to bring Isla a blue biro pen and a small A5, lined pad. She reached out to these two objects with one goal in mind, she was going to tell Connor that she loved him the only way she could...

...through a love letter.

Connor,

I am going to do everything I can to get my voice back. I want to be able to talk with you late into the night like we used to. I am going to try f***ing hard to get my vocal chords working again. I want to love you as much as you love me by telling you how much you mean to me through spoken words. I may not be able to for some time but I sure as Hell am going to try my hardest to. I don't ever want to see you cry again, especially if I'm the cause of your tears.

I love you, Connor Jessup. I love you so much.

Isla. X

Connor looked up from the note he had found on the side table, to watch the still form of his sleeping girlfriend. She was still hooked up to the heart monitor, canula and IV but gone was the oxygen mask. Isla seemed so peaceful as she slept. There was no frown upon her brown, no tears in her eyes and no grimace upon her features. No now, she looked peaceful, like she was free of her demons. Oh how he longed to know what she dreamed about.  As he sat there watching her, he smiled sadly, relieved that she had survived the car accident, even if it had meant losing her ability to talk. They both needed someone in their lives and now they had each other.

“So, how's he doing?” Valerian whispered as she handed Connor a cup of coffee, he eyes analying Isla as she slept.

“The doctor came by a few hours ago and gave her some kind of sedative to help with any swelling in her throat, so she's just sleeping the initial effects off.”

Valerian nodded, taking a sip of her cooling beverage. “Are you okay though? It can't be easy sitting here day and night.”

Connor shook his head. “Honestly, if I wasn't here with her, I'd probably be at home continuously worrying about her.”

Valerian stared mournfully at her tea.

“Valerian?”

The distracted female looked up, frowning.

“What ya thinkin' about?”

She smiled sadly. “Just how young you two are. I can't believe that you're both having to deal with such an adult situation.”

He shrugged. “Life is full of unexpected surprises.”

Valerian nodded and sighed, placing her cup of tea on another table in the room. “Have you spoken to Isla recently?”

Connor shook his head. "She was asleep by the time I got here."

The brunette female gazed at her niece once again. A fond memory came to mind. “She got a tattoo the other day.”

He looked genuinely shocked. "What?”

“Yep.”

Connor's eyes widened in surprise. “What of?!”

“Your initials.”

“Should I ask where?”

“On her rib cage, her right I think.”

The actor wrinkled her nose. “Her Fathers must have had a heart attack.”

“Oh, very nearly. Mark thought it was her just expressing herself.”

Connor quietly chuckled. “Ever the understanding parent.”

“Well one of them has to be.”

“Yeah, James is far too uptight.”

“He always has been, don't you know what Mother used to say about him?” Connor shook his head. “'He was born an old man. I should have known when he popped out wearing a house coat, smoking a pipe.'”

He chuckled, glancing over at Isla, making sure that he hadn't disturbed her. “There is something I need to ask you though, Val.”

“Anything, you know that.”

“Well,” she bit her lip. “as you know, it's Isla's birthday soon.”

“Yeah.”

He blushed. And well, we've been dating for nearly four and I wanted, I was planning, on asking her to...to marry me. It was supposed to be on her birthday but now seems like a better time.”

Valerian was stunned. “Marry her?”

“I've thought about it for a long time...”

The adult narrowed her eyes, unconvinced. “I don't know, Connor...”

"Don't worry, I can tell that you think my idea is stupid..."

“Well,” she glanced at the door. “i guess I could, I mean, maybe you could...”

“Really?”

“Yeah, yeah I think you should ask Isla.” Valerian felt her lips tilting into a smile. “I thonk that she'd love to marry you.”

Later that night when Valerian had left to return back to her flat, Connor quietly opened the door, popping his head around the door. The room was illuminated by a dim lamp, which omitted a soft golden glow around the room. His eyes rested upon Isla, who was lying on her back on the bed, one arm lazily draped over her eyes. He smiled at how peaceful she looked, even if it was due to sedatives, he was glad that she was able to sleep. “We'll work around this, Isla, I promise.”
