After Dean decided to be a show-off, the three of us headed inside to our first-period class. On the way, Elena was talking to Dean about the crazy throw he just made outside, and Dean just brushed it off in that charming way he always does whenever he starts deflecting. "I'm serious, Lena, it was nothing major," he smiled. "Besides, I never would have been able to play football like that at all if he hadn't shown me how." As soon as I heard him say that, I instantly rolled my eyes in feigned annoyance. "C'mon, Dean, you're just going to expose me like that?" I sighed.

"Hell, yeah, I am!"

"Wait. I didn't know you played football, Stefan," Elena chimed. I just shrugged and looked away, "I'm decent, I guess."

"You know what?" Dean chimed. "You should try out for the team."

I shook my head. "I don't think so." "Why not?" He countered. I shot him a knowing glare, which I prayed he would acknowledge. "You know why?" He groaned dramatically. "Fine, whatever. No football tryouts," he grumbled. "Buzzkill." "Seriously? What are we five?" I bickered. "Why can't you try out for the team?" Elena cut in. Before I could come up with a defense, Dean swooped in to save me... Again. "He has this wrist injury from his last school, his doctor advised him to lay off the sports if he wanted to keep his hand," Dean lied effortlessly. Despite being grateful for his unwavering loyalty, it still unnerved me to see Dean lie so easily and without hesitation.

"Well, that's too bad. I bet you would've been great," she smiled.

"Yeah, well, even without the injury, you saw Tyler over there. Not to mention, we all know how Matt feels," I added. "I think Dean already has enough to worry about without me joining the team and making myself a target."

"That's because they don't know you," Elena argued. "And Tyler is an asshole by nature so..." Dean drawled sarcastically, prompting Elena to hit him on the shoulder. "What he's trying to say is," Elena replied with a pointed look at her boyfriend, "to them, you're the mysterious loner guy. It wouldn't hurt to be part of a group. Make some friends besides Dean."

"Hey, what's wrong with being friends with me?" Dean griped defensively. "Nothing, but that doesn't mean he should only be your friend," she countered soothingly.

Taking a moment to observe the couple, I couldn't help but realize that the two of them really did work well together. Where Dean was erratic and defensive, and a bit cocky, Elena was much calmer and open, and gentle. She seemed to tame the wild beast that was Dean Winchester while subsequently unleashing him at the same time. The way they interacted was like fire and water put together. They both worked well in a way that I couldn't help but find myself smiling at them.

"Dean, all I said is that he should get out more," Elena stated. "This coming from the girl who spends her alone time writing in a cemetery," Dean sassed. "Hey, come on. There is more to me than just the gloomy graveyard girl," she scoffed with feigned indignation. "Oh, yeah like what?" Dean smirked. I could tell he enjoyed riling her up, which I couldn't for the life of me try to understand.

As it were, the two lovebirds were sharing a moment, which I now felt I shouldn't be privy to. So, I did the only thing I could do. "Alright, while you guys quarrel like an old married couple, I'm gonna go to the bathroom before class starts," I said loud enough for them to hear. They both turned to me and smiled. "Okay, man, see you in a bit," Dean retorted.

And with that, I left and walked down the hall with a soft smile on my face. Somehow, I already knew those two were going to be the death of me.
