"Hey Steve?" Bucky called to his husband from their soon-to-be library.
They had spent the day turning their spare room into a library and just spent hours assembling bookcases. Steve had gone to make them both lunch and left Bucky unattended. Silly decision.
"I'll be back in a minute, I'm almost done." He called back, spreading peanut butter onto the sandwiches.
"Can you actually come here right now?" He asked with a bit more urgency. "It might be an emergency."
Steve set the knife down and started back to the room. "What happened?"
"Something." He answered vaguely a few seconds before Steve reached the doorway. "Hi."
Steve was met with the sight of Bucky on the floor bleeding profusely from his head with one of the previously standing bookcases on the ground.
"I was gone for five minutes. What happened?" He asked as he quickly knelt beside him to find the source of the blood that was gushing down the side of his head and face.
"I wanted to move this bookcase to the other side of the room so we could put a chair here instead." He explained as Steve hurried to get a towel.
"How did it fall? I didn't hear anything." He questioned as he returned with an old towel to stop the bleeding.
"It tipped over too fast. I caught it with my head before my hands and I set it down so it wouldn't break." He winced as Steve held the towel to his head.
"What am I going to do with you?" He shook his head.
"We should add some greenery in here. A few plants would look nice." He spoke as if nothing was happening while Steve held pressure on the wound.
"Yeah, but we'll forget to water them. Every plant we've ever had has died within a week." Steve pointed out, using the edge of the towel to wipe some blood off of Bucky's face. "Fake plants?"
"No, real ones. We'll keep these ones alive." He insisted. "We can get a cactus or two because they don't need really watered so we can't kill them."
Steve chuckled, giving in. "Alright, we'll get a cactus. Let's see how we're looking here." He decided, carefully removing the towel to look at the gash in Bucky's head. "Hold this." He dropped the bloodied towel in Bucky's lap.
Steve carefully studied the wound, moving some of Bucky's hair out of the way and feeling thankful his hair was short now. "It's still bleeding but not as bad. I don't know, it might need a few staples. It's kind of wide."
"No thanks, I'll be fine." Bucky decided, standing up and bringing the towel back to his head. He took his belt off and wrapped it around his head, buckling it under his chin to keep the towel in place. "Let's get this bookcase back up. We can run to the store for plants and a cozy chair for the corner when we're done."
"Oh? We'll go to the store with a belt wrapped around your head and blood stains on your face and shirt?" Steve challenged him. "Oh, not to mention the open wound on your head."
"The wound is covered, it'll be okay."
Steve stared at him in disbelief as he started picking the bookshelf back up.
"Little help here? Last time I tried to move this alone, I almost executed myself." He paused, lifting the shelf a few inches off the ground and looking to Steve.
Steve helped him get the shelf standing again and positioned where they wanted it. "Okay, it looks good. Can we readdress the open wound on your head now?"
"What is there to address? You helped it stop bleeding, it's covered, pressure is being applied via my belt. All is good." He shrugged it off, wiping away a trickle of blood that was dripping towards his eye.
"You're not serious."
"Oh, but I am. Let's go eat lunch, I'm hungry." He walked out and headed for the kitchen where Steve had abandoned the food.
"So what's your plan here? You're just leaving a towel and belt strapped to your head for the rest of the day?" He questioned as he followed him to the kitchen.
Bucky took a bite of a peanut butter sandwich and nodded. "I mean, yeah until I shower, at least. The serum will help it mostly close up by then anyway so why waste time getting it stapled or stitched back up?"
"You scare me."
"Boo motherfucker."
