Pony's POV

"Remember how Two-Bit was wisecracking last night"? I asked. "Last night....just last night we were walking Cherry and Marcia over to Two-Bit's. Just last night we were laying in the lot, looking up at the stars and dreaming...." I said. "Stop it! Shut up about last night. I killed a kid last night. He couldn't of been over seventeen or eighteen, and I killed him. How'd you like to live with that"? Johnny said. He was crying. I held him like Soda had held him the day we found him lying in the lot. "I didn't mean to," he finally blurted out,"but they were drowning you,and I was so scared...." He was quite for a minute. "There is sure a lot of blood in people" said Johnny. He got up suddenly and began pacing back and forth slapping his pockets. "Whatta we gonna do?" I asked. I was crying by then. It was getting dark and I was cold and lonesome. I closed my eyes and leaned my head back, but the tears came anyway. "This is my fault" Johnny said in a miserable voice. He had stopped crying when I started. "For bring a little thirteen-year-old kid alone. You ought to go home. You can't get in any trouble. You didn't kill him" said Johnny. "No!" I screamed at him. "I'm fourteen! I've been fourteen for a month! And I'm in it as much as you are. I'll stop crying in a minute....I can't help it" I said. He slumped down beside me. "I didn't mean it like that,Ponyboy. Don't cry,Pony,we'll be okay. Don't cry...." said Johnny. I leaned against him and bawled until I went to sleep. I woke up late that night. Johnny was resting against the wall and I was asleep on his shoulder. "Johnny?" I yawned. "You awake?" I asked. "Yeah" said Johnny quietly. "We ain't going to cry no more, are we?" "Nope. We're all cried out now. We're getting used to the idea. We're going be okay now". Johnny said. "That's what I thought," I said drowsily. Then for the first time since Dally and I had say down behind those girls at the Nightly Double,I relaxed. We could take whatever was coming now. We could see for miles;see the ribbon of highway and small dots that were houses and cars. We couldn't watch the sunset, since the back faced east, but I loved to look at the colors of the field and the soft shading of the horizon. One morning I woke up earlier than usual. Johnny and Pony huddled together for warmth_Dally had been right when he said it would get cold where we were going. I went to steps on the back porch. The dawn came then. All the lower valley was covered with mist, and sometimes little pit of it broke off and floated away in small clouds. The sky was lighter in the east, and the horizon was a thin golden line. The clouds changed from gray to pink, and the mist was touched with gold. There was a silent moment when every

So far I not liking it here. I just want to hurry up and leave. We will be leaving by the end of the week. I remembered when the story. I am glad no one is asking me and questions. The next four or five days were the longest days I've ever spent in my life. We killed time by reading Gone with the Wind and playing poker. Johnny sure did like that book, although he didn't know anything about the Civil War and even less about plantations, and Pony had to explain a lot of it to him. I actually leaned a few thing myself. It amazed me how Johnny could get more meaning out of some of the stuff in there than Pony could_Pony was supposed to be the deep one. He was especially stuck on the Southern gentlemen_impressed with their manners and charm. "I bet they were cool old guys" said Johnny. "They remind me of Dally" said Johnny. "Dally?" Pony said, startled. "Shoot,he ain't got any more manners than I do. And you saw how he treated those girls the other night. Soda's more like them Southern boys" Pony said. "Yeah....in the manners bit,and the charm, too,I guess," Johnny said slowly,"but one night I saw Dally getting picked up by the fuzz, and he kept real cool and calm the whole time. They were getting him for breaking out the windows in the school building, and it was Two-Bit who did that. And Dally knew it. But he just took the sentence without battling an eye or even denying it. That's gallant" said Johnny. We could see for miles;see the ribbon of highway and small dots that were houses and cars. "Isn't pretty" someone asked. I turned around to see Pony standing. "It sure is" I said. "Golly, that sure was pretty" said Johnny. "Yeah" Pony said. "The mist was what was pretty. All gold and silver" said Johnny. "Uhmmmm" Pony said trying to blow a smoke ring. "Too bad it couldn't stay like that all the time" said Johnny. "Nothing gold can stay" said Pony. I was actually remembering the poem he was trying to say. "What"? Johnny asked. "Nature's first green is gold,Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf's a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief,So dawn goes down to day...."Nothing good can stay" I said interrupting Pony. "You know the poem"? Pony asked. "Yeah, it's one of my favorites" I said. "Oh,mine too" said Pony. Johnny was staring at me and Pony. "Where'd you learn that? That is what I meant" Johnny asked. "Robert Frost wrote it. He meant more than I'm getting though. I always remembered it because I never quite got what he meant by it" said Pony.
