The next few days were absolute torture for both Greg and Rodrick.

Rodrick tried to occupy himself by brainstorming new lyrics but anything he came up with, wasn't any good.

While Greg was constantly being humiliated in front of his friends and his father. Mrs. Heffley had decided to organize the 'Reading is Fun Club' for Greg and his friends because apparently it would help stimulate their minds. Meanwhile, every time his dad would try to bond with him, Greg kept screwing it up.

So far, summer for both Heffley brothers was terrible.

But during the week, Greg received a phone call.

"Hello?" he said as he picked up the house phone.

"Hey, Greg." It was Rowley. "I was calling to say that I can't make it to the book club today. My mom is taking me to the country club and she says I could invite you."

"No thanks," Greg grumbled.

Suddenly, Mrs. Heffley popped her head into the kitchen, holding a classic novel. "Hey," she whispered, holding up the book. "Let's crack open 'Little Women' and see what's up with Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy."

"I'll be right over," Greg blurted before he forcefully hung up the phone.

Going to the country club was the best decision Greg had made. Being Rowley's guest allowed him to have free smoothies and explore the club as much as he wanted to. He also stopped by the pool to see Y/N who was working her shift as a lifeguard. They had a good conversation before he and Rowley went exploring some more. That was when he encountered Holly.

Unfortunately, he lied to her and said that he was a member. He also told her that he could play tennis. He didn't know which lie was worse. Telling her that he was a member of the country club or telling her that he was good at tennis. Judging by the looks Rowley have him, both were equally bad.

But other than those minor lies, Greg had the best day ever. He even told Holly he would play tennis with her the next day at the club. He just hoped that he would be able to magically gain the skills it takes to be good at tennis.

The worst part was going home and lying to both his parents that he had been given a job at the country club. But it was the only way he was able to continue seeing Holly.

Besides, his dad bought it. All was fine. Nobody was suspicious.

He let out a sigh of relief as he walked out of the kitchen, feeling triumphant that he successfully made plans with Holly for the entire summer.

As he made his way up the stairs, Rodrick watched him from the couch skeptically. There was no way that his little brother was able to get a job.

Greg was up to something. And Rodrick had nothing better to do than figure out what.

———————Two Days Later——————

The Heffley's, the L/N's and everyone else in the neighbourhood had been invited to a Fourth of July party at the Warren residence.

Every year, the Warrens threw a big backyard party on the Fourth of July.

Rodrick always hated going. He hated the Warrens and he hated how many people attended. It was always crowded.

Thankfully, this year, he had someone to stay with.

Another thing he was thankful for was that this was the perfect opportunity to ask Greg about his so called job.

As his parents and Y/N made their way to one of the picnic tables, Rodrick leaned in close to Greg.

"Hey, worker bee," he whispered. "You know, you having a job doesn't pass the smell test." He pointed to his nose.
