I was a little confused by your request so I hope I got everything in there that you wanted. Hope you all like it! *

I tiredly rubbed my eyes as I left the Homestead with my breakfast in my hand. Every morning I woke up earlier than the other Gladers to prepare for my daily run. We ran from the moment the doors opened at the break of dawn to half an hour (at the latest) before the doors closed. It was tiring and the excessive heat in the Glade didn't help.

The other Runners were gathered at the closed doors, probably already having eaten their breakfast consisting of some fruit. I was halfway to the doors when I heard my name being called behind me.

Spinning around, I caught Newt who was running after me from the hammocks where he should have been sleeping. He was Second-in-Command but he still didn't need to get up as early as us. His limp slowed him down a little so I had to wait for him to jog over and catch his breath.

"You got everything you need?" He asked about the packed sack clipped to the Runner's strap across my chest. I twisted around to show him the bag and nodded.

"Nice. Did you sleep well?"

"Mhmm," I hummed, eyeing the boy curiously.

"That's good. Did you-"

"Okay Newt. What is this really about?" I stopped him and put my hands on my hips. He was a naturally caring boy who genuinely wanted to know how you were but this was weird.

He sighed, tilting his head to stare down at his feet digging into the dirt. "Do you have to go?" I sighed and turned around, not wanting to have this same conversation again.

He didn't want me to be a Runner from the moment Minho mentioned it. He didn't think I was too weak because I was a girl (that was a fight we had before that ended with him cradling his burning cheek) but he was scared of the maze. He told me the real story of his limp so I understood why he didn't want me in there but if I could help us get out of here, then I'll do it.

I turned around, ready to walk away from him when he ran in front and blocked my way. "Wait, just hear me out."

"I have heard you out Newt and every time this ends with us fighting and me running off into the maze. I don't want to do this right now." I tried swerving around him but he jumped in front and put his hands on my shoulders.

"Look, I know that you don't want to hear me anymore but please listen?" I sighed again, turning my head towards to doors but still letting him talk nonetheless. "I know that you're strong enough to be a Runner but that doesn't mean I still want you to be. The maze is dangerous and I'm scared you'll get hurt or worse," he glanced down at his foot. I tilted his head up with my finger on his chin.

"I know you're scared but I have to do this. You know more than anybody that we have to get out of here and if I can help in some way then of course I will. I have to get us out of here." He didn't seem to like that answer but he pulled me into a hug anyways. He put both of his hands on my back while mine wrapped around his neck.

We hugged until my watch beeped beside his ear, startling him a little at the loud noise. The alarm told me I had to be at the doors now because they would open in a couple minutes. He hesitatingly pulled away as if he really didn't want to let go.

"Promise me you'll come back to me." He had a serious expression but sad eyes as he looked down at me.

"Promise. I'll see you later," I told him before running off towards the maze. I waved once to Newt who was watching me run to the doors. I joined the other Runners at the doors and waited for them to open.
