WICKED Memorandum, Hour: 9:30
TO: My Associates
FROM: Ava Paige, ChancellorRE: THOUGHTS ON THE MAZE TRIALS, Group A
I think it's safe to say the Maze Trials were a complete success. I wasn't expecting so many survivors but the more the merrier. It's too soon to say but they might be the key to everything.
In spite of all this positive news, Subject A4 has escaped. She was left unsupervised momentarily and is now lost to the Scorch.
We aren't sure if she made it out or if the cranks have gotten to her but our team is searching the Scorch as we speak. Until we find her, it seems we lost another possible cure. I assure you, she will return to us.
Until tomorrow, then.
Newt followed Thomas blindly into the maze, into the helicopter and now into the desert against his better judgement. He knew Thomas wasn't the brightest of the bunch but he still hoped Thomas was smart enough to come up with some sort of plan. Unfortunately, and honestly unsurprisingly, Thomas had no plan besides a group of ghosts hidden in the mountains that might not even exist at all.
Nevertheless, Newt wasn't getting left behind which is how he ended up inside the crank infested mall just like the others. The mall was filled, or at least this section was, with a collection of unorganized objects ranging from medical supplies to kids toys. Using the empty bags also scattered around the mall, they filled them to the brim with anything they felt might be useful out in the scorch.
Newt was busy loading up his bag when something caught his eye, his heart suddenly skipping a beat. His calloused hands reached for the picture frame lying face up on the dusty floor, the girl in the photo looking too familiar. It took him a few seconds to work up the courage and see exactly who it was in the frame, whether it was who he thought it was or not. He sighed heavily in relief when he saw he had been wrong.
Newt didn't talk much after (Y/N) disappeared, never wanting to connect with someone else in case they too were to be taken from him unexpectedly. However, he and Alby did tell the others of her true gender once they decided (more like Newt begged) to have a small unconventional funeral. All the boys wished that she had just told them the truth from the beginning and maybe she would have still been there. The worst part of it was Newt never got to tell her how he felt.
Once the bags were packed, the boys unintentionally migrated deeper into the mall, following a path of light that abruptly turned on without any sort of reason as to why. They figured the two that were missing, Minho and Thomas, must have done something.
The mall that had been usually quite was now filled with distant howls, as if wolves inhabited the abandoned stores and shops inside. Nobody had a clue as to where or who the howls were coming from until they saw Minho and Thomas running towards them, an army of cranks not too far behind.
Mumbling a few curse words under their breaths, the remaining Gladers slipped the backpacks onto their backs to begin running from the beasts quickly approaching. Winston tossed Thomas his backpack once he was close enough and then the Gladers dashed in the opposite direction of the cranks.
They were heading in a straight path towards the heart of the mall yet they seemed to be at a dead end when a set of escalators came into view. Splitting their group between the two sides, they met again at the top and made a rash decision to go to the left.
