Chapter 80: Goku Vs. Jiren (Part 1)

So..." Goku said as Jiren stopped walking, "you finally decided to fight me, huh?" The Saiyan took a fighting stance. Jiren's eyes shone in the glare of the light source that illuminated the stage. Suddenly his eyes widened, and winds with the force of a hundred hurricanes rushed out in all directions. Everyone, including Goku, had to guard against the gales. When the winds finally died down, Yamcha lowered his arms. His expression made it look like someone had just punched him in the gut. "W-w-what... I'm not sure that even Goku could scratch a guy like this!" Goku's forward hand flexed a little. A drop of sweat glided down the side of his face- a tiny, clear teardrop of sweat. It hung off his chin. Then it fell to the ground. Plip.

Goku's aura burst to life and his power skyrocketed as he fired a Kamehameha at Jiren. But as the energy wave shot towards Jiren at mind-boggling speeds, it seemed to hit an invisible wall. "What? No way! That's impossible!" Krillin shouted. Yamcha shook his head. "No, it isn't. Tien did the same thing way back in the 22nd World Tournament when I fired a Kamehameha at him." Tien nodded. "That's right. But this seems to be a much more powerful invisible energy shield, and it also looks like he's not even trying." "Why isn't Goku going Super Saiyan Blue? Is he actually underestimating this foe?" Supreme Kai asked in a worried voice. "No, Supreme Kai." Krillin said, now with a confident smile on his face, "It's the opposite." He turned back towards the fight. "Goku's testing how he stacks up against Jiren." Goku finally stopped holding the Kamehameha and instead went for a much more straightforward option- he went Super Saiyan and rushed Jiren. Goku punched the Pride Trooper right in the face as hard as he could... and nothing happened.

Goku continued to hit Jiren to no avail. He kicked. He punched. He chopped. He kneed. Nothing. Goku jumped off Jiren's chest, turned around as he hit the floor, and went Super Saiyan 2. He charged forward a second time and kicked Jiren in the neck, and this time Jiren moved- just a tiny bit, but his head still tilted by about a millimeter. Goku narrowed his eyes, then punched Jiren in the chest. Nothing. He kicked Jiren in the neck again. Another fruitless effort. He began punching Jiren in the chest once more, multiple times. Still no reaction. "What do you mean by what you said, Krillin?" Supreme Kai inquired. Krillin still had a confident smile on his face. "Martial artists, especially master-level ones want to fight their enemies after bringing out their full power. By seeing how their opponents move and showing their own power, ultimate battles unfold." Master Roshi nodded. "Well said, Krillin!" "What if Jiren isn't interested in Goku?" Tien wondered. Krillin kept smirking. "There's no way he isn't. Jiren's been observing Goku intently. I'm sure he wants to see all of Goku's power." "They both see each other as an opponent worthy of enhancing themselves." Master Roshi said. "Right." Krillin agreed. Master Roshi chuckled. "Martial artists are the same, no matter what the generation or world." Krillin directed his attention back to Goku's battle with Jiren. "We're counting on you, Goku!" 

Goku jumped backwards and quickly transformed into a Super Saiyan God, which confused Yamcha. "What? No Super Saiyan 3?" Marorizu shook her head. "Super Saiyan 3 apparently gives the user a massive power boost, but at the cost of their stamina. It can only be used for a small amount of time before it becomes too much to bear." "Oh." Yamcha replied, "I get it." He looked back towards Goku, who attacked Jiren, throwing a punch which Jiren blocked- with one finger. Krillin didn't seem worried, though. He pumped his fist and smiled. "He made a move! Yes, keep at it, Goku!" Goku threw punch after punch, piling them on in the hundreds, but Jiren moved his finger and blocked them all. Neither seemed to notice or care about the crater around them which was growing by the second. Finally, Goku yelled in effort and threw one last punch, but Jiren's finger didn't budge. Goku lowered his fists and stood up straight. He wasn't tired, but Jiren hadn't even blinked the whole time. "You can't get serious like this, can you?" Goku asked. He seemed to make up his mind, and whatever he was thinking of doing made him grimace. "Then here goes." 

"Haaaaah..." Goku began to scream as he powered up. Wind rushed around him, and the stage seemed to shake lightly. "Haaaaaaa... HIYAAAAAAAAA!" Goku's hair began to stand up as a blue shell surrounded him and just as quickly crumbled away, revealing his Super Saiyan Blue form underneath. The cyan aura with yellow flakes flared upwards around him as Goku stared down Jiren, who narrowed his eyes ever so slightly. Yamcha looked rattled. "If Jiren only used a finger to block the attacks of Super Saiyan God, then how is Super Saiyan Blue gonna fare against power like that?" Tien balled his fists and scowled. "No matter how strong the opponent is, we need to have faith that Goku can, at the very least, put up a good fight." Every single warrior, whether they were disqualified or still on the stage, totally stopped whatever they were doing to watch the battle. Goku walked up to Jiren until he was right in front of the Pride Trooper and they glared at each other. Wind began to pick up and blow around the stage, and the stage itself began to shake again. 

BAM! Goku punched Jiren, but Jiren blocked the attack although he was still sent flying backwards. Goku charged after him as Jiren's back broke through a giant rock. Goku threw another swing, but Jiren's guard remained unbreakable. They went hurtling through several more boulders until finally the two combatants came across an open path and began to ferociously battle. Goku and Jiren traded blows at speeds that were almost too fast to follow, even for people as experienced with sensing energy and with watching fights like this as Yamcha. One second, Goku and Jiren would be throwing punches and kicks near a boulder, and the next second, they'd be fighting again a few meters away. Finally, Jiren crossed Goku in the face and sent him flying, then appeared above him and kicked him into the ground. As Goku bounced about ten feet, Jiren reappeared behind him, kicking him forward, and then appearing next to Goku and slamming him with both fists right in the stomach. Goku crashed into a particularly large, strangely-shaped rock and Jiren appeared next to him again, grabbing him by the leg and beginning to spin him around. As Jiren swung Goku around and around by the foot, Goku crashed into the larger portion of the rock, which they were right next to. He tried to block against it, but when that didn't work, he looked very worried. However, being Goku, he chose door number 3 and used the Kaio-ken technique while in the Super Saiyan Blue form, busting out of Jiren's grasp and kicking him right in the cheek. Jiren didn't even have a scratch on his face, and he retaliated by grabbing Goku's leg again and throwing him towards the ground. Goku landed on his feet and blasted off to the side just as Jiren attacked with a punch. Jiren looked over to see Goku charging up a Super Kamehameha as he fell towards the ground.
