Chapter Thirty-Four

Katniss POV- (Later that night)

Peeta is in the bathroom getting ready for bed and I'm laying down, waiting for him to get out so we can go to sleep.

I hear his new phone buzzing on the dresser so I go over and just as I'm about to pick it up, he comes running out.

"Katniss! I got it." Peeta says, taking it from my hands.

Peeta turns it off and I just stand there dumbfounded.

"Peeta?" I ask.

He shoves the phone into the pocket of his pajama pants and gives me a look.

"Sorry."

"Who was that?" I ask him.

His face registers shock, "Uh, don't worry about it. I promise, it's nothing." He tries to assure me.

I fold my arms across my chest, "Then why won't you let me near your phone?"

"I'm sorry, it's really nothing."

"You haven't let me even touch it without freaking out since it got here." I say.

Peeta's face shows guilt but is pushed back seconds later, "Seriously, don't worry about it. I'm sorry I'm being weird." He says coming over to me.

I just stand there looking at him, "What are you not telling me?" I accuse.

Peeta always let's me see his messages and calls and everything and I let him see mine.

We've never been private like that and have always been open books to each other.

I don't understand why it's different now, especially with a new phone.

Peeta tries to unfold my arms and take my hands but I pull them away from him, "No, I'm not gonna be all lovey with you until you give me a good reason as to why you're being weird about your phone." I say sternly.

I need to know what's going on now.

I know Peeta would never cheat on me but he has just been acting really weird lately.

This on top of the whole Delly thing, is really worrying me.

He's just not been himself lately and he's so paranoid.

Peeta takes a step back and gives me a look of defeat, "I can't tell you but it's nothing like you're thinking. It's innocent, I promise."

I look up and give him a glare, "Then just tell me."

"I can't but don't worry, please?"

I am infuriated with him right now.

"Nothing has stopped you from letting me see your phone. Why now? Are you texting Delly or did you order a sacred phone that only Peeta can have?" I say furiously.

Peeta gives me a hurt look.

"Katniss, you know I would never do that to you. Please, just trust me?" He pleads.

I feel so angry I am about to cry.

Just as the hot tears build up in my eyes, I nearly explode.

"I do trust you but it doesn't mean I'm not mad."

"Don't be mad."

"Just like you don't want me to touch your phone, I don't want you to touch me. Please just go sleep somewhere else tonight?" I say, feeling sick to my stomach.

Delly has us both on edge, just like she's intending.

Peeta's mouth gapes open, "I told you that it's nothing bad. Just please trust me." Peeta says and I can tell I'm really hurting his feelings, that he's not really hiding anything.

I feel bad that I've almost made him cry but I as much as I do, I am going to pretend I don't care right now.

This is all just too much for me to think about.

I can't think of one reason why he would hide something from me.

"I trust you, Peeta but right now, just please leave me alone." I say simply.

Peeta's faces dulls at my words.

"I'll leave you alone but don't forget that I love you and I wouldn't do anything to jeopardize our relationship." Peeta says, walking towards the door.

I just stand there, waiting for him to leave.

My eyebrows soften when he finally shuts the door and my scowl dies into a frown and tears begin to fall.

I trust Peeta more than anyone but with this whole Delly thing going on at the same time, my mind is playing tricks on me.

I don't know what to think or who to trust.

Even Peeta's Dad doesn't fully trust me and I've never given him a reason to.

I crawl into my half empty bed and toss and turn all night.

Without Peeta, sleeping is no use so I just bury my face into his pillow and smell is sweet scent that's dissipating from the last time he laid here.

I think about the words he spoke when he gave me the promise ring and again when he asked me to marry him.

The promises he made me and have kept.

Why would now be any different?
