Chapter forty-seven; That was close

▴ ◃ ▾ ▹

Jasmine ran her fingers across spines of books as her eyes didn't really follow all the titles that were displayed. As she did it with her left hand her eyes caught what time it was on the watch she was wearing. Letting out a sigh through her nose at the ungodly early hour when she was again doing the duty of watching over the empty library. She felt like the universe was laughing at her as she had to do this alone two times a week. Some students enjoyed the warm and peaceful atmosphere of the library, Jasmine not so much. It always reminded her of studying and then she felt bad for not doing it but had no energy to actually pick up a book.

So she quietly got used to the situation and cursed the Head Girl only in her head. Jasmine was standing in the muggle novels section, nothing really pricking her mind as she had no intention to grab a book. She was merely trying to speed up the time.

''Good morning.'' Someone whispered right next to her ear.

Jasmine let out a shriek and quickly turned around with widened eyes. Remus was standing there with a proud smile on his face by the fact that he managed to scare Jasmine with such little effort.

''Don't do that,'' Jasmine said breathlessly not liking the fact that she was so easily scared.

First Sirius got used to doing that now Remus was about to as well. Remus pouted a little and Jasmine finally calmed down her fast-beating heart. Then he opened his arms and invited Jasmine in for a hug, which she would never refuse. It felt nice to be close to him again as these moments they actually got to spend time together felt fleeting.

''Are you excited for tomorrow?'' Jasmine asked releasing from the hug but not stepping far away from him.

Remus drew his eyebrows in confusion at what Jasmine was getting at. The girl in front of him smiled smugly before she started to sing as a joke. ''Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you...''

Remus chuckled making Jasmine stop with the singing and smile sweetly up at him. She grabbed his hands not letting go of the smile. The gift that she had for him was constantly on her mind and she couldn't wait to give it to him.

''First of all, I don't know how you found out it's my birthday,'' Remus said looking at her with raised eyebrows, ''and second I don't want you to gift me anything. I don't like this whole point of giving gifts on birthdays. Yes, I was born but that doesn't make it a special achievement.'' He tried to joke.

Jasmine saw the truth behind his words and she couldn't help but feel sad about what he said. She felt the same when it came to receiving gifts, she didn't like it at most but once she thought about her friends she would give them anything, no matter the expenses because all of them deserved it. Remus gave off the feeling that he thought so low of himself that the gifts weren't deserved. Jasmine was on to it to prove him wrong.

''I have my connections of knowing when your birthday is, as of a present it is too late, I already got you something.'' She smiled and didn't miss Remus' drop of mood.

It looked like he wanted to complain further but Jasmine quickly held tighter on his hands and he seemed to forget what he wanted to say. Then his eyebrows furrowed again. ''How come you know almost everything about me but I'm still in the dark about when your birthday is.''

He narrowed his eyes at Jasmine. The Hufflepuff smiled cheekily and winked before letting out a few chuckles at his expression. Remus took a step closer.

''So you're not going to tell me?'' He wanted to appear threatening. Jasmine only felt amused by it.

''You're smart, you're going to figure it.'' She pursed her lips in a smug way as her eyes stayed focused on him.
