Chapter fifty-seven; Marauders' secret

The wind blew a strand of Jasmine's light brown hair right onto her face. She raised her free hand and fixed the strand back behind her ear. Her other hand was locked with Remus', their fingers intertwined as Remus' thumb gently caressed Jasmine's knuckles again and again. They were sitting side by side at the edge of the Astronomy Tower, their feet dangling through the railing over the edge. It was already way after curfew but the two of them stayed put because there was little to no chance that anybody would find them up there. Since it was Saturday there was also no Astronomy class making their time together much more at peace. The air wasn't as chilly as expected for a spring night so the two weren't cold, despite the wind softly blowing here and there.

Remus cleared his throat. ''So, what happened on your date?'' He looked down from watching the sky and turned his head to see Jasmine's reaction.

At first, she frowned at the word 'date' but she kept looking out into the darkness through the railing. Remus' question was simple and he didn't mean to sound salty or jealous. He was only curious and deep at the back of his mind he just wanted to know if Gabriel tried to do anything with Jasmine.

Jasmine shrugged. ''Nothing special. We went to Madam Puddifoot's tea shop.''

Remus chuckled at that and shook his head. Jasmine gave him a side glance that could only speak words of confusion. Madam Puddifoot's was known for people to go on dates there but it was also looking posh and Remus never stepped foot in there. Jasmine had no comment of Gabriel's choice on the place, yet she could argue she wouldn't choose it personally.

''I was in a pretty bad mood at the beginning because I was constantly thinking that the whole date was fake.'' Jasmine continued looking away again.

''Was it fake?'' Remus asked in curiosity and couldn't move his eyes away from her face. He wanted to see all her reactions, all her emotions, trying to decipher if she'll in any way lie to him or if he could see that in the slightest chance she'll hint she likes Gabriel or not.

Jasmine shook her head. ''No, it wasn't. For Gabe it was real. He said that William had nothing to do with it and he was surprised when he didn't mind at all. The funny thing was that Gabe for a very long time believed, William was just overprotective, not that he was controlling me. Then we spent a good time shit-talking William, but he also made me understand why the lot of them are such good friends. It was kind of nice.'' Jasmine finished explaining with a small smile.

Remus nodded, frowning a little at the thought that Gabriel was playing the wrong game here even if he was oblivious to his relationship with Jasmine. ''Do you believe what he said?''

Jasmine took her eyes off the moon's reflection in the Black lake. She turned her face towards Remus with raised eyebrows. He was asking a lot of questions yet his face was strangely serious as if he was trying to act neutral about this. She nodded. ''I do.''

Then she inspected Remus more. He only nodded with a smile of his own and looked away. No wrinkle of worry on his forehead, no frown of anger or disappointment, no distant eyes. He just seemed content. Jasmine leaned back a bit and tilted her head, now her eyebrows drawn together in confusion.

''You ask awfully a lot of questions but you act so neutrally about this. Are you okay? And don't lie to me.'' She pleaded.

Their eyes locked, Remus' green ones were now looking at her with adoration. ''I am. I have you right here beside me, that's all the reassurance I need.''

Then he released his hold on her hand and wrapped his arm around Jasmine's waist, pulling her closer to his side. He pressed a soft kiss to her forehead which made Jasmine smile. Then she smiled and leaned her head on his shoulder with a small blush on her cheeks. She smiled at the fact of how trusting Remus was and she appreciated it greatly, she did not need a nervous and jealous wreck next to her. She wrapped her arms around Remus' torso leaning even more into him as they both watched the landscape in front of them in the night.
