I WANT COMMENTS OR NO SMUT. YALL KNOW I MEAN IT.

Unedited.

Novalie;

I popped open the bottle of five hour energy as I walked into the lab. I was running on four hours, getting off of work at three just to wake up at seven for class. I managed to make ten thousand dollars this weekend, which makes thirty thousand for the entire week. I was sore, my body aching with every step I took but it was worth it in the end.

I managed to pay off the rest of my tuition on Saturday, which left me with ten thousand to last me until the weekend coming. I gave Claire the money for her uniform and anything else she needed, my sister hugging me so tightly with the biggest smile that made me feel a little better about our situation.

You're making due, Nova. That's what matters.

I walked to my desk, being one of the only students since I was early. I tapped my fingers against the desk, feeling jittery as I finished the rest of my drink. It didn't go unnoticed, the Professor watching me chug the rest of the small bottle before tossing it into the garbage. I looked over at her and she smiled, but I saw the worry in her eyes causing me to look away.

I'm fine, lady. Stop looking at me like that.

"Novalie, can you come here for a second please?" Professor Madden asked causing me
to swallow hard. I stood up and walked over to her desk. My body was jittery and I knew it was from the drink. My hands were trembling and my eyes were wide open. The Professor analyzed my face for a second, her eyebrows slightly pushed together considering I looked like a psycho right now.

It was better than falling asleep.

"Those drinks are poison. I hope you're not drinking them everyday to stay up." She whispered. I couldn't help but stare at her eyes. They were so pretty and reminded me of my moms eyes. Claire and I took after our dad as far as we know. We were darker than our mother, but not too much.  She had hazel eyes just like Professor Maddens. I have dark brown eyes, and Claire has light brown ones.

"Would you rather me fall asleep?" I asked causing her to chuckle at my sassiness. Her eyes met mine as she smirked slightly and I couldn't help but smile back.

"Just..we don't need you passing out in class from heart palpitations. Be careful. Here..this is for you." Professor Madden breathed as she opened her bag and handed me a large leather bound notebook. I blinked rapidly, looking up at her in confusion causing her to smile.

"I noticed you were taking notes on your syllabus. I don't know you, but I do know that a notebook will be more sufficient than loose paper."

I stared up at her for a moment. I wasn't sure how to respond and I watched as her pretty eyes analyzed my face nervously. I swallowed hard and held back my tears as I nodded with a soft smile.

"Thank you. I keep forgetting to buy one and just took loose leaf from my sister this morning. So thank you..seriously. Um..here-"

"What are you doing?" She asked as she saw me take my wallet from my bag. I looked up at her in confusion as her eyes melted into mine and I swallowed hard.

"You don't want me to pay you back? These type of notebooks are expensive-"

"No. No of course not. It's for you. It's a gift. Why would I want you to pay me back for helping you?"

Because it was all I was used to. Paying people back.

"I-um.."

"What?" She asked gently as she looked up at me while leaning against her desk. I felt flustered by her presence and shook my head before shooting her a shy smile.

"Thank you. Seriously."

"You're welcome. Just..don't make it too noticeable that I bore you." Professor Madden stated with a wink causing my smile to widen as I rolled my eyes. I walked back to my desk shyly and sat down, placing my bag on the ground and looking up to see her still staring. I looked away shyly and allowed my fingers to caress the leather cover of the notebook, before opening it.

Okay, Novalie. Let's do this.

I managed to stay awake for the lab, writing down my notes and making sure to pay close attention to the course work we did today. We spoke about the difference between waste and sharps containers, pretending to throw out contaminated waste. She was testing us to see if we remembered the difference, making sure we had our PPE on our bodies to make it seem as if we were in a real laboratory.

I managed to pass, cheering quietly as I received an A for the day and proceeded to go to the lecture hall for the next part of the class. I lasted majority, but felt myself start to crash toward the end of the lesson.

It didn't go unnoticed, Professor Madden's eyes on my droopy ones as I tried to stay up. I slipped a piece of gum into my mouth, chewing slowly as I tried my best to stay up but failed, my head falling forward.

I couldn't remember falling asleep, but woke up to soft tapping against the desk causing me to abruptly sit up. The professor flinched from jumping and we both stared at each other for a second, her cheeks turning red from being startled so easily.

"Novalie-"

"I know. I'm sorry." I hissed as I ran a hand down my face before looking up at her with sorry eyes. She sighed and stood up and I stood with her as she looked at me for a second.

"Is..is everything okay at home? Are there any sort of accommodations that you need for this class? Because I'm more than happy to help, but you have to be transparent if you want to pass this class, Novalie." Her voice was gentle, yet laced with immense worry that caused me to gasp slightly. It was never my intention to make it seem as if I had a rough home life. I was just exhausted from work.

"Everything is fine, Professor Madden. I just..I work late nights and it clashes with my class schedule. No accommodations needed. Thank you." I whispered as I looked down. I gasped slightly as she used a gentle finger to push my head up.

"Don't look down. Just..do the best that you can to fix whatever it is that's making you this exhausted. Sometimes it's just not worth it."

With that, Professor Madden walked out and left me alone with her words repeating in my mind. I swallowed hard and walked out of the lecture hall and down to the lobby when I saw her talking to a tall blonde woman that had an arm wrapped around her shoulders. They were talking abruptly, the blonde woman laughing as Professor Madden smiled widely at her while rolling her eyes.

Of course that's her type. Light skin, tall and bougie. Whatever.

I wasn't too sure why it upset me, but I turned away and walked out of the building in a hurry, the confusion toward my disappointment running through my mind. I called my Uber, pushing the image of the Professor and the mystery woman to the back of my mind. It shouldn't matter this much to me what her type is. It's not like we would ever get together, and besides, I didn't have time to focus on anything other than Claire and school.

I have priorities that mattered more than anything else, especially some Professor that I'll never see again once I graduate.
