Chapter thirty-four.

"I love you, Kie." Pope says.

"What?" Kie asks.

"I love you. I'm in love with you." Pope says.

"You're wasted." Kie says turning back around.

"No, I know I'm wasted, and that's why I'm saying this now." Pope says grabbing her arm and she turns around. "I really feel this. I love you. I've been meaning to tell you, I love-."

"Are we doing this right now?" Kie asks. JJ sucks his teeth and I purse my lips.

"I'm trying to tell you how I feel." Pope says. "Pope.. Pope! Pope! Pope! Pope, sh!" Kie says. "Hey, I'm tryin' to tell you, I love you." Pope says. All their words jumbling together.

"First of all, I need you to be quiet." Kie says.

"Okay, yeah. Quiet, I mean-" Pope whispers.

"No. Stop talking, now. Starting now. Second of all.. thank you for saying that. Okay.. Now, that's very sweet, but it's- Look, it's not gonna happen." Kie says.

"Okay, well, why not?" Pope asks.

"Because Pogues can't mack on other Pogues." Kie says.

"That rule doesn't make sense, and nobody's ever followed it." Pope says.

"Look, I- I want something different." Kie says.

"Okay, I-." Pope says.

"I- I wanna go to Antarctica, and I wanna ride camels.." Kie says.

"Me too." Pope says.

"No, no." Kie says.

"I want to do those things.." Pope says.

"Pope, it's-." Kie says.

"..with you.." Pope continues.

"-not gonna work." Kie says.

"I want to be.." Pope says.

"No. No. It's not gonna happen!" Kie says. "Do you understand what I'm saying? Like.. Look, I know that that's really hard to hear right now, but we don't have time for this, and this is a really bad place to do it. Are you okay?"

"Yeah." Pope says softly.

"Are you ready for the plan, or..?" Kie asks.

"Yeah." Pope says wiping the tears out of his eyes.

"Okay." Kie says. JJ holds my hand.

Kie knocks on Sarah's window and Sarah comes running over.

"Kie! Tobes!" Sarah says. We try to open the window but it won't budge. Kie holds a flashlight to John B's wanted paper.

"Are you in on it?" Kie asks.

"Did you think I was?" Sarah asks. Kie shakes her head.

"No." Kie answers.
