verything had been going okay for Wednesday. There were no new monsters, no more rivalries between her and other students, and she was getting closer with Xavier. The only off-putting about the new semester so far was the hole in her chest that opened a little more every time Enid mentioned her boyfriend, Ajax. And she mentioned him a lot.

He was Enid's current obsession, and it took all of her energy to focus on anything else. She talked about the dates they went on, her plans with him, the joke he had made during breakfast, anything she could remember from the day. And when she wasn't talking about him, she was talking to him. They stayed up late into the night, talking to each other for hours and then falling asleep on the phone, then waking up the next morning and continuing the conversation like nothing happened.

Wednesday was sick of it. And not in the good way. It was similar to the time Enid had almost moved out of their room, but Enid was always with her, and yet Wednesday always felt so...alone. She should be glad Enid wasn't bothering her about having such a big crush on him anymore. She should be focus on things like school, her novel, her cello, and Xavier. But she couldn't.

She liked Xavier, as well as she could, but not in a more-than-friend way. And after she accused him of being she monster and everything that had happened, she couldn't see herself being with him. Not like that, anyway. She decided she would have to talk to someone about this. Someone trustworthy enough to not spread it around school if she asked. Someone close with Enid, and could tell her why she was feeling the way she was. Someone like Yoko Tanaka.

And so, the next day, she pulled Yoko aside. "We need to talk." Wednesday demanded in her monotone voice. Yoko gave her a sideways look. "Okay..?" She said, puzzled. Wednesday huffed, trying to muster up the will to ask. "Recently I..." she stopped and stared at Yoko, who stared back blankly. "Enid has...been talking about Ajax a lot and I..." she stopped again. Yoko raised an eyebrow. "You...?"
"I hate it." Wednesday finished, scowling.

Yoko didn't say anything for a while. It looked like she was trying to figure out what Wednesday meant. Then, her face lit up. "Oh my god." She said. "What?" Wednesday asked flatly. Yoko grinned. "You like Enid!"

Wednesday looked up from her typewriter. Thing tapped the desk curiously. "Can't focus." Wednesday muttered to him. Thing nodded and hopped off the desk to go find his moisturizer. Wednesday watched him with a dull face, then turned and looked at what she had written. Most of it seemed to be gibberish. No good for her novel. She's have to rewrite it later.

It had been 3 days since Yoko had confirmed to Wednesday her feelings for Enid. It was at this point that she was finally beginning to acknowledge these feelings. She wanted to do something about it, but she wasn't sure what. It didn't help that Enid still had a boyfriend on top of everything. At least, Wednesday thought. Until Enid came into their room sobbing.

She slammed the door and stomped across their room, then collapsed onto her bed and cried. Wednesday decided to wait for her to calm down before she said anything. As easy as it might be to overpower Enid with the right move, she had seen what the wolf had done to that school bus when she had been stood up. One wrong move and she could end up a heap of shredded bits.

After about half an hour, Enid had seemingly calmed down enough for Wednesday to ask what was wrong. She was clinging to her favorite stuffed unicorn, and used tissues were scattered around her bed and the floor, but she wasn't wailing and screaming into her pillow anymore. Instead it was more of an occasional sniffle. "Enid. You've been sobbing for half an hour, and as much as I enjoy the sounds of sorrow while I write, I cannot focus."

Enid glared at Wednesday. Maybe she had worded it wrong. She hadn't meant it to come off as too harsh. Wednesday took in a deep breath. "Tell me what's wrong." She said. Enid didn't answer. Instead, she sniffed again and turned away. "Enid." Wednesday said, moving closer to her side of the room.

"Fine, Wednesday." Enid spat. "I'll tell you what's wrong. Ajax broke up with me for that girl he brought to the dance to make me jealous. Ended up falling for her or some bullshit. Maybe that'll bring you enough joy to focus on your stupid novel." Her voice broke on the last sentence, and she let out another sob. Wednesday was quiet for a while, taking in the information. This meant that Enid was single now, but she was still very obviously distraught over Ajax, and probably would be for a while.

Wednesday took another deep breath and gathered the confidence to walk over to Enid's bed and sit down next to her. Enid slowly came out from her blankets to look at her roommate. Wednesday looked back, and Enid noticed that her eyes looked just a tiny bit more sad than usual. She sat up, and leaned on Wednesday. Wednesday didn't try to dodge or move away. In fact, she even put an arm around the blonde.

The two stayed like this for a while, and after another hour or so, Enid felt much better. She felt oddly...safe next to Wednesday, as creepy and weird as the goth usually came off. "...Wednesday?" She asked. She didn't get a response, but she was pretty sure Wednesday was listening. "Can I re-braid your hair?" Enid asked, sitting all the way up to look over at Wednesday again.

Wednesday looked at her, then sighed. Enid felt a little sting in her heart. Maybe she had gotten a little too comfortable. She shouldn't have even asked, she knew it would be a n-
But then, Wednesday reacher up and tugged the tiny black hair tie from one of her braids. Then, she pulled out the other too. "Braid it tight." She said, handing Enid the ties. Then she turned to face away from Enid, and give her full access to her hair.

Enid had seen Wednesday with her hair down before of course, but only a few times, and usually for only short periods of time too. Wednesday always had them tied up again before she went to bed. And Enid had never, even gotten to touch it. But now, Wednesday was letting her braid it. Her hair was soft, and shiny. It was also rather wavy from being in braids so long. Enid grabbed her brush and ran it through her hair a couple of times. There weren't many tangles at all, so Enid went ahead and started on one of the braids.

She pulled the first braid as tightly as she could, then made sure it was up to Wednesday's standards. "Is that okay?"
"Yes." Wednesday replied, adjusting herself a little. Enid nodded and kept braiding. The first braid was finished pretty quickly, but Enid did have to bobby pin a few stray baby hairs. Then, it was on to the other side. Same routine; first braid, ask it it was okay, finish the braid, bobby pin the flyaways. After Enid had announced that she was finished, Wednesday took both braids and placed them in front of her shoulders.

"Thank you." She said. Enid smiled. "Your welcome." She said. By now, the werewolf had forgotten all about her ex. Right now, she was just enjoying some time with her friend. Or maybe, in a month or so, after Enid could gain the confidence and rebuild her self-esteem, they could be more than just friends. But neither one really minded that.

Friends was already a big step, and they were going to take it one step at a time. Together.
