Ink

The beach is different at night.

The sand is colder, the water is warmer, and everything seems as though it is washed in a layer of dark ink.

The waves are calmer, the undertow not as strong, and the sand doesn't seem to stick so badly.

Ashley had never been to the beach at night, and she marvelled at the difference.

Someone had a portable blue- tooth speaker, so there was music, and people were dancing.

Nicole dragged her over, but she shook her head, pleading.  Ashley didn't know how to dance.

She managed to sneak away, leaving Nicole to dance with one guy, Patty, and nearly ran into another guy.

His name was Dylan.

Ashley and Dylan talked for a long time, then Dylan asked Ashley to go skinny dipping with him, but Ashley didn't want to.  She said she was tired, but, really, she was just shy.  Dylan persisted, but she refused, and found Chloe and Nicole again, sitting around the camp fire with Patty and two more girls, one singing softly along to the tune that Patty was picking out on the guitar he was holding.
