"Why'd you run out? And what's the point of an invisibility rune if you don't remember to silence your phone?" Alec asked over Clary's shoulder as she ducked around him to answer her phone, Simon on the other end of the call as she came face to face with Serena.

"Hang up the phone," she ordered, knowing that the mundane joining them would just lead to more trouble.

Instead, Clary just told Simon exactly where they were to come and meet them.

"You are not going anywhere, asides from back to the Institute," Alec said as he began to lead them away only to be stopped by Clary's voice.

"Why do you always look so miserable?"

"I don't," he defended.

"Yes, you do."

"Maybe it's because every time I'm around you, someone I love ends up hurt."

"Ok, that's enough from the both of you," Serena said as she got in between them, mostly pushing back Alec.

"Look, Maryse gave us permission to do this, something you would've discovered if you hadn't run off like a child," Serena said to Clary. "So, let's get along, pop into Clary's loft quickly and see if the box is there. It'll take 5 minutes, 10 tops," she said, mainly trying to persuade Alec to work with Clary.

Alec only sighed as he looked at the pleading expression on his wife's face.

"This better be quick."

The unlikely trio met up with Simon as he led them over a wall and through various gardens to the fire escape of Clary's loft.

Simon and Clary went up the ladder first, flirting as they went, though neither of the two saw it.

Serena was up next but she sent a mischievous grin to her husband. "Don't be looking at my ass now," she said as she began to climb and the entire way up she could feel Alec's grin as he stared at her behind, which couldn't help but be flaunted in the tight leather leggings that she wore.

"Whoa, I don't remember it like this," Clary exclaimed as she looked at the symbols that had been tagged on the walls and doors all over the building.

"They're runes and wards of protection, cast by a warlock," Alec explained.

"Dot," Clary explained as Serena ran a finger over an angelic rune.

"Some of these have been here for years," she noted.

"The only difference is now, I can actually see them," Clary said before the mundane voiced that he was able to see the symbols.

"How do you have the Sight?" Alec asked, now even more untrusting of the mundane.

"I don't know. But whoever drew these could take some lessons from clary. Their work is pretty sloppy," he commented.

"Kept her hidden for 18 years, I'd say it worked," Serena voiced as Alec put his arm around her, and Clary smiled nostalgically as she brushed her hand over a heart on the wall. A heart where hers and Simon's initials were written inside.

"This is from when Simon and I were engaged to be married."

"I most certainly don't want to hear this story," Alec announced as his head oscillated, scanning their surroundings for anything out of the ordinary.

But as the two reminisced, Serena couldn't help but think of the time that she actually got engaged as she twisted the diamond ring on her finger with a smile.

Alec had proposed in the middle of a fight. They were battling a horde of Shax demons when he blurted it out. To say Serena had been surprised was an understatement, but Alec had been deadly serious. He'd even pulled out her ring from around his neck once they'd won and got down on one knee to ask her properly. Jace, Izzy and Maryse even helped him pick out the ring.

It had actually been perfect. A million times better than the dinner proposal that Izzy had wanted him to do.

Alec kissed her temple as he saw this before they both furrowed their eyebrows at how Simon was able to open the sealed door with the amount of strength a mundane of his size couldn't have.

Strength that looked eerily familiar to Serena.

She was still trying to place it as they walked into Clary's burned room, Simon able to hear how floorboards creaked in two different spots when the Shadowhunters couldn't with their enhanced senses.

After a little digging, Alec had found the box before a noise from outside draw the attention of the couple.

"Stay here," Alec ordered, bow appearing in his hands.

"Alec," his wife protested.

"Stay here, keep them safe. Grab what you need and don't move until I get back, we've been here too long."

Alec was outside, bow drawn, as creatures ran through the bushes, moving too fast before he could see and strike properly.

But fear grew in him when he heard Clary's voice, screaming at someone to let go of her.

Running like a blur to the street, Alec arrived just in time to watch two men shove a hand-cuffed Simon and Clary into the back of a car and three more carry an unconscious Serena into the back of another car.

And Alec could do nothing but watch as they drove away.
