"I might just bar all vamps, from fraternizing with their Shadowhunter friends," Aldertree threatened Simon as his door was kicked in by a pissed off Serena Lightwood whose left arm was in a sling.

"Relax, Simon, he can't do that. Shadowhunters have to interact with Downworlders constantly in order to ensure their safety. That is a fundamental order of the Clave that you wouldn't be breaking now, would you, Aldertree?" she asked sweetly as she stood between the two, Simon visibly relieved that she was here.

Aldertree gave a soft laugh as he smiled. "I wasn't aware you'd been allowed out of the infirmary yet, Mrs Lightwood," Aldertree said, avoiding the question.

"Clearly," Serena rolled her eyes before asking over her shoulder, "Simon, did he ask you to gather intel about the vampires and report back to him in any way, shape or form?"

"Y-yes," the vampire stuttered, and Serena's smile was victorious.

"I am the Clave Downworlder Envoy, and no informants are made in the Downworld without my authorization. And since I see no good reason why you can't trust the information coming from Raphael Santiago, I see no reason why Simon should become an informant. The next time I catch you disobeying Downworlder customs and threatening the already fragile relationship they have with the Clave, I will report you, and I will get you removed from this Institute. And I can do that. The Clave care more about preventing a Downworlder uprising than they do about informants, and this is a sure-fire way to start an uprising. So, good day, Aldertree," Serena said with a fake smile as she pushed Simon from the room.

And her smile only grew when Simon exclaimed, "That was badass!"

Alec had replaced his wife in the training room, trying to work off his anger. After Serena had been patched up, Izzy found out that Simon was unnecessarily being interviewed by Aldertree a second time and as Envoy to the Downworlders, she had a right to sit in on that interview.

So, she'd gone off to save Simon and educate him on customs that would prevent him from being in a room with Aldertree again.

As Alec's gloved fists pounded into the punching bag, Clary walked into the training room.

"Alec, are you ok?" she asked, and he stopped punching.

"Pretty bold of you to show your face here," he said, not happy in the slightest about what happened.

"I can explain," Clary defended and Alec leaned on the punching bag, tired.

"Unless your explanation can bring Jace back, save it."

"Alec, Jace is my brother too," Clary said and Alec moved to face her.

"Then why didn't you jump in front of that arrow like Serena did? Huh? You barely know Jace. We grew up with him. I grew up with him. I fought by his side. He's my brother. He's my best friend."

"Alec," Clary began as she tried to place a hand on Alec's arm only for him to move out of her reach, not even wanting to be near her much less touch her.

"Alec, I want Jace back just as much as you do!" Clary persisted. "I... I am not my mother."

"How well do I even know you?" Alec asked making the girl blanch as she took a step back in confusion. "You show up outta nowhere, you convince my brother, you convince me to search for your mother. And the next thing I know, Jace is gone. And your mother is the one trying to kill him."

Clary's eyes filled with unshed tears as she all but begged the boy to believe her. "I had nothing to do with that, Alec. I would never hurt Jace!"

With their height difference, Alec looked down on her.

"Since you've arrived, you've caused nothing but problems. My family lost their birthright. Izzy was almost de-runed. My wife almost died, twice! And she was shot by an arrow tonight that your mother fired! And now Valentine has my parabatai. And it's all because of you."

The finger Alec pointed at her may as well have been a knife that stabbed Clary repeatedly in the heart, because all these hurtful words Alec said were nothing but the cold hard truth.

"Alec," Izzy said gently as she walked into the room, having heard the tail-end of confrontation.

"I'm sorry," Clary whispered.

"Alec, this isn't her fault," Izzy defended.

"You may be related to Serena by blood, but when are you going to realize that you don't belong here? You never have."

And Alec walked off, leaving Clary to play his words on a constant loop as she tried not to cry, because it was her fault.

"Alec..." Izzy called as she chased after him, and Clary was left alone.

Absolutely and utterly alone.
