They let Magnus, inside Valentine's body, go free as per the demand.

And while the twins were unconscious in one of the rooms, the two men switched back into their regular bodies as Clary tried to use her new runic powers only for them to fail.

Sebastian had grabbed her shoulders and told her every bad thing that she'd been blocking out, that she had refused to feel. Her mother wasn't coming back. Her father would never love her. Her siblings aren't her siblings and now she doesn't have anyone to share in her pain. She's all alone.

And using that pain, she'd been able to bring down the wards around Magnus's house, just in time to pull Valentine through a portal that led him straight back to his cell at the Institute.

Alec had then made sure Magnus was ok when Sebastian called him over to the room where he found the twins.

"Serena! Serena, hey. Can you hear me?" he asked urgently as he cradled her head while Sebastian tended to Jace, both men whipping out their steles as they undid the shackles before running it over their irazte runes and their eyes fluttered open.

"Hi," she smiled as she looked up at Alec who had a relieved smile on his face.

"Hi," he laughed.

"I take it you took care of that whole Valentine-Magnus mix-up?"

"Yeah. Yeah, we did," Alec said and she smiled sleepily as she turned to Jace who was in better condition, having not been harmed when put to sleep, nor having entered in a fight with Valentine.

She reached for his hand, which he kissed before Alec scooped her up and they headed back to the Institute.

Serena was in the infirmary, just getting checked up considering that she'd taken a couple hits to the head and they wanted to make sure she hadn't haemorrhaged again. So far, her results were all clear.

Her brother was sitting next to her on the bed, Alec having gone to prepare her food for when she was discharged when the Inquisitor came in.

Jace was on his feet as Imogen approached, but Serena stayed on the bed, legs crossed as she twisted the wedding rings on her finger.

The older woman smiled at them.

"Now I know where that bold defiance of yours comes from. Yours especially," she said to Serena, a ghost of a smile on her lips. "You look just like Celine, but you have Stephen's stubbornness. You fight for and speak up for anyone and everyone who can't do it themselves, especially the people you care about. Ever the selfless warrior. There is no one more fit to be the Envoy to the Downworld."

Then she turned to Jace, whose face was blank as he didn't know how to react just yet.

"And you look just like Stephen, but you have your mother's heart. You have the passion and love that causes you to protect, even sacrifice yourself for those you care about."

Her finger's fidgeted with a chain, a chain with a thick silver ring attached to it.

"This was retrieved from Magnus's apartment. It's yours now as the eldest male," she said to Jace. "You've both had a lot taken away from you and some of that was at my hand and for that I'm sorry."

Her eyes watered as did Serena's as the blonde stood, taking her brother's hand in support.

"You both come from a line of great and powerful Shadowhunters. From a family that has been revered by generations, and feared... By those who oppose all that is good and just. This ring signifies that. And it is your birthright."

Jace's eyes began to water as Imogen placed the necklace around Jace's neck.

"Now, my children, you are about to find out what it means to be a Herondale," she said as she placed a hand on both Serena's cheek and Jace's.

Jace began crying silently as he held the ring pendant around his neck while Serena screwed it all and hugged her grandmother, the woman crying openly as she wrapped her arms around the blonde, before Jace joined the hug.

Imogen couldn't help the tears that fell because it was almost as if she was being hugged by the children she lost as she hugged the family she'd gained.

Because they were Herondale's.
