Broken Glass

Draco coughs awkwardly as he reaches the table.
"Hello", he says in an attempt to be nice.
"Nice to see you!", Blaise almost shouts and Hermione gives him a very puzzled look.
"What kind of prank are you trying to pull?", she asks.
Harry and Ron look at me for answers. "I just thought, since we're all here we might as well sit together", I smile wryly suddenly realizing how stupid I've been.
"Alright?", Harry says holding his hand out for them to shake.
I watch as they take it one by one.
Hesitantly they sit down and order two butter beers. We sit awkwardly sipping our drinks to fill the silence.
"How's Lucius", Ron mutters suddenly, eyes darting at Draco.
I almost choke on my drink.
"Ron?", I begin but Draco interrupts.
"Fine. And Arthur? Heard he was having some trouble at the ministry.", Draco shoots back.
"Mhm well I guess Daddy was wrong this time wasn't he Draco", Harry chips in.
"It's such nice weather today", I blurt.
Blaise laughs at my attempt to diffuse the tension.
"Hows your summer been so far then?", Blaise asks.
"It was going good", Hermione grunts.
"I was actually talking to (Y/N), Hermione but sorry you feel that way", he smiles sweetly.
"I think we should go", I say.
"I think we should", Ron murmurs.
Why did I think this was a good idea?
I get up out of my seat frantically, grabbing everyone's empty glasses and hurriedly bringing them to the counter.
As I step out, my shoe gets caught on my loose shoelace and I drop one of the glasses, which smashes, cutting my finger sharply in the process.
"OW", I shout.
Everyone jumps out of their seats.
"I'm fine, I'm fine", I say scrambled.
"You're not fine", Harry says.
I look around at the mess I've caused and I begin to tear up.
Distraught at the fact that I am now crying in front of everyone, I run out of the pub and I keep running.

I eventually sit down at the ice cream parlor.
I just need to be alone right now. Everything is so overwhelming.
I allow myself to be consumed by my thoughts. Maybe if I let them grow taller they'll drown me and I won't have to do this anymore.

Just as I was going to leave, I see a familiar face.
His platinum hair is hard to miss and his eyes are unavoidable even in the biggest of crowds.
He spots me sitting there and for a minute he just watches me.
He doesn't bother asking me "are you okay?" because he knows the mundane answer.
He sits down next to me and takes my hand.
He uses some silent spell to bandage the cut and I lift my head a bit.
He notices the blood has spilled onto my white shirt.
"I'll give you something of mine when we get home", he says softly.
I nod, suddenly feeling much calmer.
"None of this is your fault", he says.
I don't believe him but I nod my head still.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that to him", he says.
"He started it. You were just defending yourself", I say.
This time he nods.
"I'm glad I met you (Y/N). That day in diagon alley.", he says.
"Really?".
"Really".

"Would you like to order?", A plump, rosy cheeked woman comes around to our table and attempts to take our order.
"Em, no thank you", I say as politely as possible.
"Two strawberry peanut butters", Draco says pulling out some money.
"No problem", she smiles and walks away.
"Draco I said no because I have no money with me", I say irritated.
"I know. I was buying it for you. You're so ungrateful sometimes", he jokes.
"That's really sweet of you but I can't accept that I'm sorry", I say.
"(Y/N), I bought two Ice creams. Correct me if I'm wrong but there's two people here at this table. You don't expect me to eat two massive ice creams on my own do you?", he sighs.
"Fine. Drama queen", I laugh.
"Yes! I got you to smile", he grins.
I roll my eyes, "not for long".
"We'll see about that", he chuckles.
"You're like no one I've ever met", he says suddenly.
"That doesn't sound good", I laugh nervously.
"It is", he says quietly staring into my eyes.

"Oh thank god I found you", A voice shouts.
It's Blaise.
"Most awkward experience ever", he says and I laugh.
"I agree. Worst idea I've ever had to be honest", I sigh.
"Pretty stupid idea (Y/N) and you're usually the smart one", Blaise laughs.
"I don't know why I even tried", I admit.
"You tried because you're a good person", Draco says suddenly.
Blaise watches curiously as Draco stares me down.
"Um I better get back", I say and I get up out of my seat.
"So soon?!", Blaise says mockingly.
I roll my eyes, "I'll see you guys soon no doubt".
"Keep in touch", Draco says as he pulls me in for a hug.
"And stay sane", Blaise remarks as he joins the hug.
"See you soon guys", I wave as I walk back to the pub, alone.

The trio is sitting outside on the benches, waiting for me. Hermione pulls me into a hug, "Are you alright?".
"Don't worry, I'm fine", I say.
"I'm so sorry (Y/N).", Ron begins.
"Forget it. It was a stupid idea", I sigh.
"It was a lovely idea (Y/N). If anything we ruined it", Harry says.
"Thank you but it's over now. Let's just get home", I murmur.
Harry sounds like Draco sometimes, I think to myself. I'd never tell him that though.

On the journey back I find myself reminiscing on last summer at the manor. Draco's diary and the entry about his father. If only the trio knew he hated him as much as they did.

We were all quite silent as we clambered into bed. For a moment I was almost unaware of their presences.
Despite being at the burrow, I feel more alone than ever.
