Evelyn's POV

"So how does it feel to be starting today?" Sonnett asks me as I lay on the ground

"I'm so tired" I mumble

"Are you tired from running away from the conversation you were supposed to have with your mothers two days ago?" Alex asks me and I wince

"Shhh it's been two days I can still avoid it" I say as I pull my sweater over my face

"I don't think you can avoid something like that kid, they're just trying to talk to you about something important" I hear Alyssa say

"I'm scared"

"It's okay to be scared kid, but they just want to talk to you about it and make sure you're okay"

"I'm okay thank you"

"Evelyn Amaya Rodriguez Press!"

"That's your mom, good luck" Sonny says as she runs towards Kelley's locker

"Good luck, I love you" Alex says kissing my head

"Please don't leave me Al" I pout

"It's all you" she says and walks away

"We need to talk to you" Mom says

"B-"

"No buts, please we want to talk to you"

"Okay"

Christen's POV

"How are you feeling after what happened at the game?" I ask Evelyn as she swings her feet "Pumpkin?"

"I'm okay" Evelyn replies her head hung low

"Truth kiddo" Tobin says making Evelyn look up.

"Worthless?" She says and my eyes widen

"Oh pumpkin no, you should never feel like that" I say as I crouch down

"Why does it matter that the color of my skin is different? Why are we always treated differently for it? For speaking my native language?"

"It's the way the world is unfortunately"

"My people are in cages! CAGES!" She yells

"I understand that pumpkin, I do. But all we can do right now is fight for that equality that we all deserve"

"How do I even explain it to J that the world isn't as pretty as she thinks it is"

"That's not your job pumpkin, it's mine to show her and teach her" I say as I squeeze her knee

"I'm scared"

"And it's okay to be scared pumpkin" I say as I stroke my thumb on her cheek

"How do you do it?" She asks and I smile softly

"Did you forget who I am" I ask and she shakes her head

"You're Christen Annemarie Press my mother" she says and I smile

"That's correct and I'm also a proud black woman" I say kissing the top of her head

"All we want is to keep you safe and to help you when you need it kiddo even if you deny it" Tobin says

"Thank you mom, Toby" she says hugging us both

"We love you" I say

"I love you guys" Tobin says wrapping her arms around us

"Alright we better get back to the locker room we have a game today!" Evelyn says and I nod

"And remember shirts are inside out today" I say
