Maya was a doctor; now, when people hear such a title, they think of some steady and patient individual, she was, but only during her hours of hard, backbreaking work.

When approached by a distressed lover demanding entrance or just a plane annoying person, she didn't mind letting loose or speaking her mind; she was a doctor, not a nursery worker.

Kicking back and sleeping inside the operating room was the canine faunus herself, tired and exhausted after Y/N's lengthy and stressful surgery.

A large collection of footsteps woke her with one of her ears twitching, earning an annoyed groan from the doctor, who quickly opened a tent flap to see who it was.

"Are you the doctor who operated on Y/N?" Someone asked with urgency in their voice.

Maya wasn't listening too well, so she addressed the group as a whole with a sigh. "Yes, that would be me."

"We'll be taking him to Atlas from here. We could use your help-"

Her ears suddenly shot up, just as she did from her chair with a hand held out to a tall man.

"That won't be necessary." Maya replied sternly.

Clover cocked an eyebrow, curious and wary of her sudden defensive stance.

"Why not?" Qrow asked, his brows furrowed.

"My patient has a medical condition only I can treat. Doctor patient confidentiality."

"Hold on-" A voice came from the crowd as it shifted, allowing a familiar face to emerge from the back. "Maya??"

Furrowing her brows, the doctor dropped her guard. "April. Are you-you're with them??"

"Yeah." The sharpshooter sighed. "They're okay, friends of Y/N."

"Frankly, they could be friends of Sienna, and I still wouldn't let them take him." She replied hotly.

"Okay," Clover sighed, laying a hand out to Harriet, calming her. "I'm sure we could work something out together. Atlas has the best-"

"It's not a matter of money or equipment." Maya replied. "He's staying here, and that's final."

"Can we at least know why?" Qrow shrugged.

"He's a very private individual." Maya said vaguely. "I know how he would feel about Atlas of all people taking him away."

Her heart was in a good place, the right place even, she had seen the damage his blood could do, and the only way to keep it a secret was to keep him in Menagerie where the leaders and population would back his presence and oppose the foreign company of others.

"You mentioned a health condition," Clover said, trying to deescalate the situation. "Could this be the same we're all in on?"

Maya frowned, cautious. "Depends... would you like to tell me what it is?"

"Y/N told us about the extensive research done," Clover replied with a low voice and a scanning eye. "Denser muscle fibers? Skeletal structure? That ring a bell?"

Maya hummed as her folded ears finally stood tall. "Y/N was very keen about not being poked and prodded the last time we spoke. He doesn't trust anyone with the knowledge of his abilities."

"He trusts us; it's why we know." Clover added.

"Yes, but you aren't the council members that left Menagerie to fend for itself."

"What's the big deal there?" Qrow asked, genuinely curious.

Maya sighed; still tired and barely tolerating anyone's presence, she reluctantly opened the tent flap, knowing it was the most private area in Kuo Kuana.
