Vacuo's merciless heat ground into Y/N's back, making an outing feel like he stood opposite of an open Dust stove.

And still, he walked alongside Monroe, scanning the dusty ground for something the old Ranger insisted on finding in the late evening.

Keeping an old shirt wrapped firmly around his face with a pair of tinted goggles, Y/N was able to keep the majority of flying dust out of his face, but he found himself tousling his hair in an attempt to keep it somewhat clean.

Monroe, a towering figure of authority, wore something similar, all to protect themselves from a deafening sandstorm raging around them.

He insisted on taking his young protégé out for a walk, no matter how treacherous the task may be. It may have been inconsiderate, or stupid since Y/N was barely 15, but he was determined to teach this boy something most his age didn't know.

Feeling a drastic drop in the wind around him, Monroe began to scan his surroundings, to soon spot a distant overhang face the direction of the storm.

The jingle of his boot's spurs increased in speed, egging on the Ranger-in-training to follow in suit.

Standing below the sharp overhang of a collapsed boulder, Monroe pointed to the ground, gaining Y/N's attention.

"See that?" Monroe asked, crouching low to touch the dirt. "What's that say?"

Removing his goggles, Y/N got a good look at a footprint. The raise in the heel and the deep lowering toe told him exactly what they were doing out here.

"They went east." The boy replied.

"East." Monroe nodded, pleased. "What do you think?"

"They won't make it far," Y/N said, staring off into the distant horizon. "They have to set up camp."

Their target wasn't heading into the warmer, more humid area of Vacuo, no, they were trying to lose them in the desert. And that only meant the frigid weather was there to stop them.

"And?" Monroe mumbled with a newly plucked cigarette between his lips.

"They're alone, running. We can catch up."

"Mmm." The Ranger nodded once more before taking a long drag from his smoke. "Good. We'll give it a few. Let 'em tucker out. Surprise 'em."

Y/N stood in the circle of ruin that had taken place a week ago. A dirt road located a dozen or so miles away from Kuo Kuana, and just a few more from another village.

The young man, whose love was murdered, revealed more than enough to get a ball rolling. In fact, he was the most suitable person to approach seeing as he's a part of the recon division of the White Fang, red sash and all.

Thanks to him, Y/N stood in the exact spot the transport was attacked, he even spotted the tree the lead vehicle collided with just a few meters away.

With his keen senses, he got to work, narrowing his eyes to search the ground and get a good whiff of the air for anything out of place.

He was fortunate enough for the land to remain somewhat untouched. No rain or high speed wind had erased a deep footprint in the dirt, a mark that was small and moving quick.

Adam.

Following the boy's path, he came upon the area his assailants attacked from, a much more lush tree line that had the slightest marks of red in the soil and in the air.

He's fast, but sloppy.

In the copious amounts of blood, Y/N could see the traces of panic. Humans, quickly realizing their mistake, had attempted to run. And suspiciously enough, all in the same direction.
