Luke was so fucking nervous.

He sat on his bed, staring at the cracked screen of his iPhone. Why did he even agree to this?

Calum's named appeared on the screen and he smiled at the message underneath it, just a little smiley face with a number one next to it. Calum was going to phone him in one minute.

Luke hadn't agreed at first, he didn't want to let a stranger hear his voice. Calum's not really a stranger though, not after all the conversations they've had now. Luke actually feels like he knows Calum pretty well.

Calum somehow only got Luke to agree, under the terms that none of them could speak a word. Luke didn't really see the point in that, but Calum insisted, said that they could just stay on the phone with each other until they fell asleep not saying a single word.

Honestly, Luke thought the idea was cute. He wouldn't admit that to Calum though, just teased him before finally agreeing, pretending not to be bothered by the idea at all.

But Luke was sweating right now, in the middle of winter.

He jumped a little, feeling his bed move under him when his phone lit up again, Calum's name lighting up his home screen, flashing with the picture of his abs. He moved around on his bed, running a hand through his hair nervously before clicking accept and putting the device against his ear.

Nothing was said, he could just hear Calum's light breathing. They stayed that way for a minute or so, neither saying anything but Luke was smiling so widely and unbeknown to him so was Calum.

This was weird but it was them and Luke couldn't help but think that this stupid level of anonymity suited their weird relationship.

His healing lip pulled as he grinned, hearing Calum moving around. Calum was moving around in his own house and Luke could hear it. He pulled his covers back, settling into his bed wearing a large t-shirt that his step dad had given to him when it got to small and pulled the cover back over him, all the while keeping the phone tightly pressed to his ear and wondering if that's what Calum was also doing.

For a few seconds Calum was still moving and Luke settled, putting his ear to the pillow and keeping the other to the phone, making sure the blanket covered everything but his head.

Everything got silent again, both just listening to each other breathe. Weirdly, Luke thought this was the best idea that Calum had had yet, it made him feel like he knew Calum better, just listening to him doing absolutely nothing made Luke feel closer to him.

"Is this stupid?" He heard a small voice whisper, and he was too shocked to even process anything for a few seconds. Calum actually spoke! The sound came through this phone and into his ear and he had heard Calum's voice! He was grinning again, letting a giggle slip past his lips and he felt light-headed.

"You're so cute." The voice whispered again upon hearing the giggle. Luke knew Calum must've been nervous too, why else would he be so quiet to speak, it made Luke a lot more comfortable to know he wasn't the only one.

He'd gotten used to Calum's flirting over text, but actually hearing it come out of his mouth was a whole new level. Luke felt butterflies, and maybe he was actually going to throw up. Nobody really complimented Luke; he was the weird guy who wore girly clothes and wasn't really that bright.

In fact, Luke can only really remember Michael and his mum complimenting him.

Luke had to contain himself, remind himself that this was a guy who only really knew his personality. If he saw Luke he wouldn't be saying these same things and sometimes the truth hurts but it has to be accepted. Luke could do that.

Luke didn't say anything back, he got his breathing back to normal realising it had been faster and lay back down, unaware of when he had sat up.

Who knows how long they spent just laying there, each in their own beds. Eventually Luke started to doze off, feeling his eyes shut lightly as he kept the phone against him and just strained to hear anything Calum did.

He thought Calum had fallen asleep honestly, he was proven wrong when another small whisper came through the phone, sounding sleepy and almost far away. "Goodnight, baby."

Luke couldn't help himself, he was too tired to stop his mouth before it started moving. "Night Calum." His voice was quiet and deeper with sleep to his own ears.

Calum was shocked, his eyes opened as he looked at his phone, loud-speaker on and lit up with BABY printed across the screen. He smiled, sprawling out on his double bed and letting his sheets bunch around his bare chest.

He listened to Luke's breathing even out and get louder, every once in a while a light hiccup coming through the speaker and Calum couldn't help but wonder what had gotten into him to have him listening to a guy sleep.

He looked at his phone one last time, not wanting to press the button to end the call but the phone read that they had been on the phone for an hour and a half now and Calum knew his contract could only stretch so far.

What if he wanted to have another phone call like this? No, he'd have to save his minutes. He settled properly into bed, closing his eyes and breathing before opening them, his finger hovered over the END button. He lightly tapped it, his phone screen going dark and them he closed his eyes again.

The simple words 'Night Calum' drifted in and out of his mind as he fell asleep.
