mason helped damon find a cave that was supposedly gonna help them kill klaus. damon wasn't able to get in so once mason disappeared, alaric went to check it out.
on the walls of the cave, their were a bunch of markings from the viking ages. the markings told a story they just needed to translate everything.
they saw mikael's name on the walls of the cave which lead them to think that mikael was the mikaelson's father.
may was visiting stefan when she heard damon come down.
"you know, if you three are gonna keep me locked in here for the next decade... i think we can skip the routine visits." stefan said.
"you know i'm not a big champion of this whole lexi recovery plan. but elena thinks this place is gonna weaken you up... break you down, and make you feel again." damon said.
"i don't see you coming up with a better plan." may said to damon.
"we should all listen to elena, right? i mean, her plans always work out so well, don't they? why are you here?" stefan asked his brother.
"what are you talking about? it's family day at vampire rehab. i'm just paying a visit to my baby brother." damon replied.
"go away." stefan said.
"no. no, i thought we could hang out. a little brother bonding. how you been, stef? huh?" damon said.
"you know, klaus may wanna keep elena alive... but that doesn't mean she's safe with rebekah." stefan said.
"liar, liar, pants on fire, brother. klaus compelled you to protect elena. and if you thought for even a second that she was in danger... you'd be working a lot harder." damon said.
"yeah, it seems you'll say anything at this point." may said.
"you got me. you got me." stefan said.
"yep." damon said.
"you're good. congratulations. you can go now." stefan said.
"you really have given up." damon said as stefan grinned weakly.
"actually, this is my happy face." stefan said as damon ripped the restraints off his brother.
"what the hell, damon?" may asked.
"what are you doing?" stefan asked.
"screw this lexi plan. i think we could both use a drink." damon said as may let out a sigh.
"you're explaining this to elena." may said.
later that evening elena learned from rebekah that mikael killed her mother but rebekah was lied to since klaus was actually the one that killed their mother.

mikael had visited damon and stefan telling them they needed to lure klaus back to mystic falls so they could kill him.
"all right, let's say mikael followed elena in here and he tried to grab her so he could use her as bait." stefan said getting the ball rolling on the plan.
"so far so good." may said.
"and you, what, vervained him?" elena asked.
"no, we vervained him. guys an original. we have to make it realistic." damon said.
"that's a good point, not even i could take on mikael by myself and i'm older than all of you put together." may said.
